Action at the Australian Open  will be confined to the three stadiums with retractable roofs and eight indoor courts if conditions become hazardous.

The three arenas with retractable roofs in Australia are the Rod Laver Arena, Hisense Arena and the Margaret Court Arena. Melbourne is the only venue on the grand slam circuit with 3 retractable roof stadiums.

The initiative in and of itself is a great step towards creating favourable playing conditions. At many times, the play cannot continue because the weather does not permit. This leads to nuisance for both players and fans. Melbourne park provides a futuristic idea to address this problem.

This is what the organizing authorities had to say- “We have three roofed-stadiums and eight indoor courts at Melbourne Park. In the unlikely case of extreme smoke conditions, the roofs will be closed on the three stadium courts and play will continue in their air-conditioned and air-filtered environment.”
