Day four of Australian Open 2019 has now come to a close and more names have advanced to the next stage. However, as always, there are always some big names who have been outdone and fallen by the wayside. But as each round comes to a close, that number is slowly lessening.

So, without further ado, here are the biggest upsets of Day 4 of Australian Open 2019.

The Swiss tennis player was felled by Canadian player Milos Raonic in four sets. Stan took the opening set in a tie break, but Raonic went on to snatch the remaining three, also in tie breaks. To be honest, it wasn’t really surprising to see Wawrinka lose, since he was sidelined with injury for a while.

Dominic Thiem

The Austrian lost to the local favourite, Alexei Popyrin in three sets. Popyrin took the opening two sets 7-5, 6-4, but Thiem was forced to retire while trailing 2-0 in the third set. It was a cruel end to the match, but illness cannot be helped. Also, it was a rather heated match for the Austrian as he smashed his racquet during the game.

Gilles Simon

The 29th seeded Frenchman was another casualty of Australian Open 2019. His loss came at the hands of another Australian wildcard, Alex Bolt. This match was a 5-set thriller with Simon drawing first blood with the opening set win. But Bolt answered back by winning the second set. It went back and forth again until Bolt clinched the final set to win 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

The man to famously knocked out Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open last year, will not be performing that feat again. Hyeon Chung was bundled out of Australian Open 2019 after losing to Pierre-Hugues Herbert in four sets. The score read 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in Herbert’s favour and the South Korean was sent packing.

Philipp Kohlschreiber

In the women’s draw, Johanna Konta was arguably the biggest casualty as Britain’s hopes went up in smoke. However, in her defence, she had a tough opponent in the form of Garbine Muguruza. The final score was 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 in favour of the Spaniard.
