As soon as tennis great Roger Federer announced his retirement, tributes from around the globe poured in. Together with the rest of the tennis world, Belinda Bencic and Stan Wawrinka, two of his fellow Swiss players, penned a heartfelt letter to thank the tennis legend for changing the game forever.

Bencic and Wawrinka have played alongside Federer on certain occasions during their careers. While Wawrinka was part of the Olympics team with the Swiss Maestro, Bencic teamed up with Federer during the 2018 and 2019 versions of the Hopman Cup.

Belinda Bencic pays homage to Roger Federer

The 42-year-old’s accomplishments are worthy of praise, and he is widely respected within the tennis community. Belinda Bencic, formerly the No.4 ranked player in the world, and one of his fellow compatriots, has nothing but glowing words to describe the 20-time major winner. A tweet from her account read, “The biggest idol and inspiration to me and so many others, forever. Thank you for everything. It’s a beautiful day to go after your dream, Belinda!” –RF31.7.2021

Bencic, a six-time singles champion, has long admired Federer and played doubles with him in the 2018 and 2019 Hopman Cups, where they won both times against Germany.

When it comes to the Swiss star’s Olympic campaign in Tokyo, Roger Federer had been there every step of the way. She won the singles gold medal and dedicated it to the Swiss legend.

Camaraderie between Federer and Wawrinka

Wawrinka, Federer’s Olympics doubles partner, responded to the news of his retirement with an Instagram post in which he wrote, “Thank you my friend for everything you have done for me over the years 🙏🏻❤️! It was a true honor to share the court against you but it was even more special to be in the same team as you 🤜🏻🎾🤛🏻! Forever grateful for all the memories on and off the court 💛. Tennis will never be the same without you 😢🌏. Enjoy the next chapter in your life with your beautiful family “

The twenty-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer and his contemporary Stan Wawrinka had teamed up to represent Switzerland in the Davis Cup back in 2014. Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, views Federer as an older brother who has helped him develop despite winning against him on only three occasions.

He respects him for maintaining his composure and modesty no matter how many questions the media, fans, or other competitors throw at him during interviews, tours, and competitions. Wawrinka remembers Federer’s words of wisdom to “live in the present moment” with great fondness.

While it will take some time for everyone to accept his decision, fans will be looking forward to his participation in the upcoming Laver Cup.
