The world of professional tennis is a high-stakes game where every player dreams of victory. The recent shocking news that has rocked this world, Simona Halep, a famous tennis star from Romania, known for her two Grand Slam wins, faces a severe setback in her career. She has been banned from playing for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) because she broke the rules related to doping.

This is a major blow to her career, and it raises pervasive questions about honesty and fairness in the sport. Halep’s doping charges and suspension are fairly reminiscent of that of Maria Sharapova‘s ban in 2016. Federer’s comments back them still stand true to the spirit of the sport.

Back in 2016, Maria Sharapova was handed a two-year ban after testing positive for the hemoglobin-boosting drug, meldonium, at the Australian Open. The Swiss tennis great Roger Federer offered his perspective on doping in the sport. The tribunal responsible for Sharapova’s case cleared her of intentionally breaking anti-doping rules, but strongly criticized her for not ensuring the drug she was taking was still legal.

Federer weighed in on the decision, stating, “It doesn’t matter if they did it on purpose or not, I don’t really see the difference. You need to know what goes into your body; you have to be 100% sure of what’s going on. If you’re not, you’re going to be damned.”

Federer’s point of view on the matter was very strong. But with a hint of balance, he further added, “Of course, she’s got the right to fight the case, like everybody else as well. I’m just for zero tolerance,” as reported by Eurosport. The 20x Grand Slam winner and retired Swiss legend has always held a very strong stance against doping in sports.

Roger Federer on stricter anti-doping rules

Back in 2015, Roger Federer opened up about how he wished for stricter anti-doping rules in tennis. He believes that more doping tests should be done to make sure tennis doesn’t face the same problems that have affected other sports like athletics. These comments from Federer came after a report from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) revealed that there was a state-sponsored doping problem in Russian athletics, and this issue could be present in other sports as well.
