The ATP authorities have now officially permitted a player to receive on-court instructions from their respective coaches, which will result in a significant alteration to the coaching rules. However, prior to this, the idea of on-court coaching was strictly prohibited for the players and was deemed a major violation. Due to the same, the American tennis legend, Serena Williams was once in hot waters when she received hand signals from her former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, during the 2018 US Open.

The chair umpire perceived it as ‘illegal’ coaching instructions and was quick to issue a warning to the former tennis ace. It further contributed to her $17,000 fine for three code violations in New York. Now, after a few years of this controversial incident, the change in the on-court coaching regulation might come as a huge relief for many players. But, the American tennis star, Taylor Fritz, isn’t impressed with the same, as he recently expressed his feelings in response to the drastic changes in rules.

In an interview with Style Magazine, as reported by Italy24.press, the American tennis star was asked about his views on the recent changes made by the authorities. In his response, Taylor Fritz made his stance clear that he is unconvinced by the idea of receiving instructions from the sidelines. The ATP player believes that these rules “shouldn’t exist” as they will take away some crucial “elements” of a player.

He said, “For me it shouldn’t exist. Understanding what is happening on the court, knowing how to solve problems and changing strategies are all elements that make the difference between a tennis player and a great tennis player.”

In Fritz’s opinion, a player should know how to solve problems and change strategies on their own, rather than relying on instructions from their coaches. The former world No. 5 player also believes that these elements will help them achieve greatness on the court. He said, “By introducing coaching, a peculiarity that made tennis a unique sport is lost.”

Apart from Fritz, there is another important figure in the tennis community who recently talked about the notion of on-court coaching.
