Current World no.5, Stefanos Tsitsipas has had a decent year so far in 2022. After losing in the second round at the Indian Wells, he lost at the Miami Open as well. However, he recently grabbed all the headlines for his comments about equal pay in tennis. According to him, women should play five sets of tennis, as they are getting paid equally during the Grand Slam tournaments.

Recently, the Greek tennis star, Stefanos Tsitsipas, made a controversial comment about equal pay in tennis. As per him, men get the same amount of money as women for playing five-set of tennis in a Grand Slam. As a result, he wants women to play five sets as well. Either that or men could play three sets of tennis all across the tournaments. Personally, he prefers playing five sets, as it makes a great show.
“There is also the topic of equal pay and everything, women getting equal pay for playing best-of-three, then getting equal pay for playing best-of-five. I don’t know. There are also a lot of scientists and statisticians, whatever, out there. I’ve been told that women have better endurance than men. I don’t know. Maybe they can also play best-of-five, I guess,” Tsitsipas said.
“For Grand Slams, best-of-five, I like it. On the other side, on the other hand, we would have seen much more variety when it comes to different Grand Slam winners if it was best-of-three, I believe. I very much believe that the winners of Grand Slams would be very different if the format was best-of-three in men,” the Greek player further added.

“I like it anyway. I like the best of five. I think it gets very physical. It makes for a great show, as well,” Tsitsipas further added about liking the five sets of tennis in the Grand Slam.
Other players react to Tsitsipas’ comments
After hearing the comments from the Greek player, Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova made fun of him in their own way. Pliskova posted a story on her Instagram where she used ‘big brainer’ and ‘smart’ stickers along with a few laughing emojis. Later, Naomi Osaka made fun of him and asked if he wanted to play nine sets or not. Accordion to her, Tsitsipas’ idea will not go through.
Meanwhile, losing in the third round at the Indian Wells, Stefanos hoped for a title run at the Miami Open. However, Carlos Alcaraz didn’t let that happen as he beat the Greek player in straight sets; the result was 7-5,6-3.

Now, Stefanos will move his focus to the clay-court tournaments. Last year, he reached the final at the French Open and almost beat Novak Djokovic. Unfortunately, he lost the final, despite winning the first two sets. Fans are hoping this year will be his year, as he’s aiming for his Grand Slam title.
