Andy Murray, also known as “Muzzcat” is almost on the verge of leaving behind his racquet on the court forever! This three-time Grand Slam champion earlier this year revealed his wish to retire. While this saddened the entire tennis fraternity, they expected it to happen at some point. As Murray revealed his “fitting” place for retirement, a former colleague revealed the legacy he will leave behind noting that “the love he has for this sport is tremendous.” 

In an interview with BBC’s TV coverage at the All England Clubformer British-Australian WTA star, Johanna Konta called Murray “incredible” and said, “The love he has for this sport is tremendous and I think he will always be a part of it in a way. “He has given everything to the sport and especially fans in this country, more than anyone could have imagined. When he does retire, they will speak about what he gave and what he achieved.”

Earlier this month, Murray told BBC that retiring at the Paris Olympics would be a “fitting” end to his glorious professional tennis career. Expressing uncertainty about Wimbledon 2024, Murray stated that he would not attend the US Open this season, as he wanted to focus solely on the Olympics after Wimbledon. Explaining his choice of tournaments, this two-time Wimbledon winner said, “I’ve had amazing experiences and memories from Wimbledon, but also being part of British Olympics teams.”

Murray recently underwent surgery to cure his spinal cyst, which left him at moderate physical fitness before Wimbledon. While he didn’t withdraw from Wimbledon, saying he wanted to wait “until the last minute to see if” he could play, he is unsure because “this is not clear cut” regarding his fitness to perform on the court.

Nevertheless, Johanna Konta’s statement highlighted Andy Murray’s huge fan following among tennis players. It also revealed her huge admiration for her colleague.

British tennis legend Andy Murray achieved one of his most memorable first-round wins at the US Open in 2020. Despite losing the first two sets and experiencing a breakdown, Murray defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round of the US Open, earning widespread applause. He won against the Japanese ATP star by 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, and 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He’s a champion of Grand Slams and gold medals because of the challenger he is, He’s so incredibly tenacious. I didn’t even see the match, but I assume that’s just kind of what he brought to the table” said Konta, who also won her first-round match by defeating Heather Watson by 7(9)-6(7), and 6-1.

Nevertheless, Johanna Konta’s statements echo the unimaginable legacy of the two-time Wimbledon champion, whose contributions to professional tennis will be etched into the hearts of the tennis fraternity.
