Is it fair to expect Jannik Sinner to stay focused on tennis while his girlfriend is in distress?

The 2024 Wimbledon Championships has entered its most interesting phase. Top players are battling it out with an aim to dig deep in the tournament. While the Russian star, Anna Kalinskaya was having an amazing run in the tournament, her campaign came to a premature end as she was forced to retire midway through her match against Elena Rybakina. As a result, her boyfriend, Jannik Sinner, looked in a grim state following her withdrawal.

Kalinskaya was trailing 3-6, 0-3 in her pre-quarterfinal match against the former Wimbledon champion. However, she found the going tough and eventually decided to retire. Sinner was present in the stands to cheer his girlfriend in her match against Rybakina. However, when Kalinskaya decided to retire and even broke down, Sinner was left heartbroken watching his girlfriend in this state.

The Italian star had an ideal preparation for the grass court season as he won the Halle Open title. Sinner defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the summit clash to win yet another title this season. However, it was a bitter-sweet victory for him as his girlfriend, Kalinskaya, lost a close encounter against Jessica Pegula.

Kalinskaya had 6 match points to win the trophy in Berlin but lost in the final set tie-breaker against Pegula. During his victory speech, Sinner expressed his disappointment over Kalinskaya’s heartbreaking defeat, saying, “My girlfriend Anna played in Berlin today. She lost, with 6 match points. So I’m very sorry for her. She also had an amazing week.

Indeed, Sinner set couple goals by sympathizing with Kalinskaya despite his victory in Halle. It goes to show how close-knit their bond is. Meanwhile, Sinner will hope to lift the mood after his girlfriend’s injury as he takes on Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal clash tomorrow.
