Federer, Djokovic, and the Williams sisters honoring Murray—does this cement his place among the greats?

Roger Federer recently made Andy Murray believe that he was “never alone.” The center court was surrounded by a massive British crowd, Murray’s family, and a thick layer of emotions on day 4. It was a tough moment for the arena to waive off to a legend who not only cherished wins and faced defeats but also created a legacy that the world would never forget.

Andy Murray made likely his last appearance at Wimbledon today. The two-time champion had to abort plans for his singles run and took the court alongside his brother Jamie Murray to take on the Australian duo John Peers and Rinky Hijikata. Although the favorites faced an opening round defeat, the day still made its way to the history books as almost every eye present in the arena was filled with tears.

Meant to be a Wimbledon farewell for Murray, fans, as well as the officials, gathered their attention as a three-minute-long tribute video was played in honor of the legend. Featuring co-stars like Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Serena Williams, the clip made Murray’s mother, Judy Murray, and wife, Kim Sears, shed tears in light of the aura created in the arena.

“We know this journey and we know what its like to live those dreams,” Roger Federer said, sharing the wisdom gained after traveling a similar road quite before Murray. Timed at 3 minutes and 55 seconds exactly, the clip contained glimpses of the Briton’s journey from the time when he was merely a kid and aspired to be great. Narrated by his rivals and co-players, the video presented words that the legend might not have heard during his time as a competitor.

“We were proud to play against you and with you,” Nadal said, speaking of the times when he went against the Briton. While all of this experienced a halt because of an injury, the three ATP stars merged their voices to mention, “And us, we have been against you and with you and we know how it feels right now!”

As soon as the clip came to an end, Andy Murray, as well as the crowd present in the arena, couldn’t stop tears from finding their way out. However, it was evident that he came to know that “those golden days belonged to everyone.” Even after facing a defeat, Murray proved that he cherishes moments over victories at this point, as all he could think about was playing with his brother.
