Was Alex de Minaur's bizarre Wimbledon exit a fluke, or a sign of deeper issues?

All’s well that ends well, it is often said. However, it wasn’t the case to be for Alex de Minaur today. Despite ending his match against Arthur Fils on a positive note at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, de Minaur didn’t look in the best of shapes. The Australian star made his first quarterfinal appearance at the grass-court Grand Slam event, albeit with an injury toward the end of the match.

After hitting a match-winning volley, de Minaur was seen limping as he proceeded toward the net to shake hands with his opponent. Additionally, the look on his face portrayed that de Minaur was hiding the pain behind his victory as his girlfriend, Katie Boulter, celebrated his win from the stands.

Further, during the post-match interview, de Minaur was asked if he felt alright after the match. Responding to this, he revealed, “I’ll be all right. I’ll find a way.”

de Minaur is in the form of his life and he entered the Wimbledon Championships on the back of a victory at S-Hertogenbosch last month. He has carried that form here and became only the second active Australian player after Nick Kyrgios to reach the quarterfinals at three major tournaments. Expressing satisfaction with his efforts, the Australian star said,

“I definitely made it a lot harder than I probably should if. It was a great job mentally to stay with it, even though at the end I could not hold my serve, but I just backed my returns. I am just excited to be in the quarterfinals. I am excited to have another battle. One thing you can definitely count on is me going out there, trying my hardest and playing my heart out.”

During an interview, de Minaur highlighted the importance of this, saying, It’s great. It’s really, really big for both of us to be at the same tournaments together. It’s not often. Recently we’ve been playing the same tournaments more and more, and it makes it a lot easier.”

Like de Minaur, Boulter has also had a good run this year. Although she lost a close second-round encounter, Boulter has already won a couple of tournaments in San Diego and Nottingham. Meanwhile, de Minaur will take on the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune in the quarterfinals. Can the Australian star spring a surprise and lift the Wimbledon trophy?
