Daria Saville is on a comeback mission, and what a journey it has been. After an ACL injury kept her off the tour in 2023, she returned with fire, showing her mettle by reaching the semifinals in Hobart and the quarterfinals in San Diego. Climbing from World No. 206 to World No. 120 in the 2024 season, she’s been nothing short of impressive. But as she battles on the court, there’s someone always in her corner—her husband, Luke Saville.

Luke Saville isn’t just Daria’s supportive partner; he’s a tennis professional himself. Born on February 1, 1994, in Berri, South Australia, Luke first made waves as a junior. His career took off in 2011 when he won the boys’ singles title at Wimbledon, followed by another Grand Slam triumph at the Australian Open in 2012. These victories earned him the No. 1 spot in the junior world rankings, a feat that set the stage for his career. However, transitioning from junior to professional tennis wasn’t without its challenges.

While Luke showed promise in singles, his real strengths began to shine in doubles. He embraced the new focus and built a solid career for himself. By November 8, 2021, he reached a career-high doubles ranking of World No. 23. One of his standout moments came at the 2020 Australian Open, where he partnered with fellow Aussie Max Purcell. The duo made an incredible run to the men’s doubles final, cementing Luke’s place as a doubles specialist.

As his career flourished, so did his personal life. Luke and Daria first crossed paths in 2009 at the Junior Davis and Fed Cup Finals in Mexico. Back then, they were just friends, but two years later, their friendship turned into a romance. Their bond only grew stronger, and by 2018, Luke decided to take the next step and proposed. On December 5, 2021, the couple tied the knot at the beautiful Greenfields venue in Albert Park, Melbourne, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow tennis players.

Life as a married couple on tour comes with its own set of challenges, but Luke and Daria have found a rhythm that works for them. Speaking on The Sit-Down podcast in November 2024 Luke explained how they manage their time. He said, “It varies from probably 15 to 25 weeks [per year], something like that. But to be honest, we’ve been dating for so many years, and especially early days in juniors, we weren’t seeing much of each other at all.” The pair understands the demands of professional tennis, and their mutual respect for each other’s careers has helped them navigate their lifestyle.

“It just comes with the business, and I think that we both know what it takes to play professional tennis and a lot of that is travel, so we both get it,” Luke added. “I think it actually really works well, and we can bounce ideas off each other.” Despite their hectic schedules, they make it a priority to maximize the time they have together, whether at tournaments or during rare breaks at home.

This week at the Australian Open, both Luke and Daria are back in action. Daria is gearing up to face Anna Blinkova in the singles category on Sunday, while Luke will step onto the doubles court with his partner, Li Tu. They’ll be squaring off against Argentinians Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni. Will this week bring new milestones for the Savilles? What do you think?
