Aussie superstar, Nick Kyrgios is all set to make a comeback to the Tour in 2025! So far, his tennis journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. Right from battling with injuries and mental health issues to playing the finals at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship, this 29-year-old tennis star has seen it all. Perhaps, now it’s time to take a look at two of the strongest pillars of his life, who stood beside him through all these thick and thin over the years. Do you know he has a royal connection, as well?
In December 2023, during the podcast of ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty’, Nick Kyrgios revealed how his mother introduced him to the racquet sport and encouraged him to take up the sport despite his initial reluctance. “Well, I hated tennis when I was young. So, you know, I was very chubby, overweight as a kid. And my mom, she was like, okay, we’ve got to get you doing some sport or be active. So she dragged me down to the local tennis courts. And I remember I was crying all day, hated it. Didn’t want to be there anyway.”
Do you know, Nick Kyrgios is the youngest child of Giorgos and Norlaila “Nill” Kyrgios? They have two other children named- Christos and Halimah. His father is Greek and his mother descends from Malaysian royalty. Norlaila was born into a royal family in Pahang, Malaysia, giving her the title Tengku of Pahang or process of the Pahang state. However, she renounced her title after moving to Australia in her 20s with her mother. While Giorgos is a house painter by profession and Norlaila, is a computer engineer.

Speaking about his humble beginnings and financial struggles, Nick Kyrgios once revealed, “They sacrificed, you know, my dad and my mom had nothing growing up. And I guess they saw me as the person in the family to eventually try and make it and help them out and help the family out.” His mother, Norlaila has weathered quite a few storms in the past few years. Her health problems prevent her from watching her son play. However, even before her health problems, Nill had said, “I don’t watch Nick play. I’m just too nervous. I get too scared. I’m just hopeless – I tend to hide.”
What is she suffering from, though? Well during an interview with The Herald Sun, her elder son, Christos said, “She’s a fighter. She has some heart issues and combining that with the heightened tension around watching Nick’s matches, she hasn’t been able to watch them at all, even on TV, over the last few years.” Due to his mother’s sickness, Nick Kyrgios was vexed by the controversy over players needing to quarantine before the 2021 AO. He opined that the organizers should’ve canceled the tournament to protect Melbourne from the COVID-19 outbreak.

Despite being not able to witness her son’s matches, she has been a big supporter of Nick Kyrgios. During an interview, the Aussie star said, “Mum has always been there, you could call her my No. 1 supporter. She’s always going to be there if I need someone to talk to.” Do you know in 2023, Kyrgios’ mother was allegedly held up at gunpoint during the theft of her son’s Tesla in Canberra? Just imagine, how hard the situation has been for this lady at that time.

In his recent IG post, he wrote, “None of this would be possible without your constant support….. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if you didn’t stay patient with me. I love you both.” For those who are unaware, in 2022 Nick Kyrgios revealed how his parents’ struggle motivated him to come out of depression. He has had quite a bit of difficult times in the past and recalling one of those moments, he said, “I came back home from a night out and my dad was just next to me and crying and saying, ‘look you gotta stop all this.’ That’s when it kinda clicked.”
Interestingly, despite losing his focus on the game for a brief span due to various reasons, his parents always kept their belief in him. His father once revealed, “He is as strong as a bull. He has always had that big sort of game and we always kept on encouraging him and kept playing it the way he wanted. We just told him to do it his way. Now everything is falling into place.” Giorgos also revealed, “As a junior, he (Nick) was always playing older kids and you could just see him adjusting. He’s a perfectionist and has been pretty hard on himself along the way.” Now, just a few days are left before he steps onto the court after a long break, do you think he can impress his fans with his magical tennis yet again in the 2025 season?
