Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini announced a shocking news today, as he is no longer a part of the Wimbledon Championships. Earlier, he announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the Grand Slam event.

Indeed, this was an enormous blow for the Italian, as he was in the tremendous form before the tournament. Also, this is a big blow for Wimbledon as well because Berrettini was one of the star players, and he was a finalist last year. Meanwhile, 18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova could not believe the news, as she reacted on social media.

Notably, the Italian player took to Instagram and announced the bad news about testing positive. In that statement, he also revealed that he has been isolating for the last few days after having symptoms of flu. Despite expressing his disappointment, Berrettini promised to make a strong comeback next year.

Meanwhile, The Italian player is not the only player who decided to withdraw from the tournament at the last moment. Yesterday, Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic tested positive for Covid. As a result, he also decided to withdraw from the tournament.

It’s safe to say, Berrettini was one of the favorites going into the tournament after winning two back-to-back tournaments on the green surface. At first, he won the tournament in Stuttgart and then won the Queen’s Club Championships again recently. Overall, he entered the Wimbledon draw with a 9-0 overall record on the grass court.

After the Indian Wells, Berrettini had surgery on his right hand, which forced him out of court for a couple of months. Moreover, he missed the French Open as well. However, missing Wimbledon will probably hurt him even more. It’s because he was the finalist last year and was looking to go one step further in the competition.
Now, he has to wait for next year to fulfill his dream at the Wimbledon Championships.
