In the world of tennis, where two associations handle the organization of almost all the international events throughout the season, can sometimes falter. As the recent WTA Finals concluded with Iga Swiatek lifting the trophy, the tournament made its way into the highlights due to the irrelevant playing conditions in Cancun. Over the controversy, the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), an association built by tennis legend Novak Djokovic, recently presented a major slam over the WTA.
After the WTA’s CEO Steve Simon denied having a conversation with the media over the controversial situation in Cancun, PTPA took charge and asked the WTA to present a report of the overall scenario. With this bold slam presented in support of players’ well-being and the WTA standing on target, the fans came forward to present their intrigue over the situation.

The WTA Finals in Cancun became a hotspot for controversies right from the get-go. Aryna Sabalenka, the world No.1 back then, sparked the debate by calling out the playing conditions as “disrespectful.” Her stand against the situation encouraged other players to step up and voice their concerns as well. When the media turned to WTA CEO Steve Simon for an explanation, there was no significant response, adding another layer to the association’s questionable behavior. Recently, Novak Djokovic’s player-focused group, the PTPA, took a bold stand against the whole situation.

As soon as the association’s Twitter handle posted this update, the fans came forward with their reactions. Although the association acted in favor of the player’s well-being, the comments from the fans smelled like sarcasm as they lacked belief in PTPA. A fan, insulting the ask of Djokovic’s association, mentioned, “We will await the WTA’s response within 10 days…” Or else? What is this nonsense?”

Another fan, targeting the questionable dormancy of the PTPA, commented, “First time I’ve seen the PTPA actually do something. But what happens after 10 days? They issue another statement?”

Launching a reverse slam to the PTPA, a fan’s comment targeted the integrity of the association itself as it said, “Curious what the WTA does, they won’t want to pay someone to investigate themselves.”

As the reactions kept coming, a fan, questioning the next move if WTA doesn’t respond to this, commented, “Cute but respectfully what r y’all gonna do if the WTA doesn’t respond within 10 days.”

With these and numerous other comments, the slam against WTA received a dose of trolling from the fans. This indicated a lack of respect for Djokovic’s association in the eyes of the general public. However, along with the fans, many tennis players also added words of criticism as Djokovic came up with the announcement of PTPA.

Rafael Nadal’s words of criticism over Noval Djokovic’s association, the PTPA
In an interview that took place a few days after Novak Djokovic announced the idea of establishing the PTPA, tennis ace Rafael Nadal didn’t hold back on his thoughts about it. The Spaniard, critical of the association, highlighted, “I think that today is not the right time for that. And even if we weren’t in the situation we are in today, there are a lot of things that are not clear.”

As the idea came into discussion amid the ongoing global crisis affecting players, organizers, and the entire tennis tour back then, Nadal prioritized unity over anything else. The 22-time Grand Slam winner called for sticking together rather than pursuing individual interests. The PTPA, as it has been covered with dark clouds or criticism, faced a negative impact, even after a genuine move against the WTA.
