The results that Coco Gauff has delivered recently have seen a significant boost from the past due to the changes in her training team. In her first tournament with the new coach, the 19-year-old sensation has already entered the finals of the Washington Open. Her results have been very dominant. However, there is one aspect where she is struggling to adjust to the new coach.

The World No.7 recently appointed the Spanish coach Pere Riba to add more aggression to her game. Pere Riba is relatively young compared to the other coaches, and has worked with the likes of Qinwen Zheng and Arantxa Rus in the past. But while she has shown much more improvement in aggression this week at Washington, communication with her coach seems to be a bit of a hassle right now.

The language barrier is a common problem faced by many athletes in sports. Not every professional is profound in English and learning the language takes time. Pere Riba is facing similar issues now. Being from Spain, learning English was not really a priority for the coach. But now that he is coaching an American who also is in the WTA top 10, knowing basic English has become a necessity.

After cruising past Liudmila Samsonova in the semi-finals of the Washington Open, the American weighed in on this topic while using Rafael Nadal‘s example. She said in her on-court interview, “My coach Pere does not know the difference between external & internal focus. Yesterday, I said I have external focus and I think top players like Rafa have external focus. He thinks they have internal.. He’s from Spain. We’re working on his English (laughs with the crowd).

Well, this is one more in a recent line of quips from the teen star. Gauff has been winning over the crowd recently with her on-court interviews. Along with making changes to her game, it seems that she has also upped her humor.

Gauff’s impressive on-court interviews

Before taking a lighthearted jab at her new coach’s English, Gauff had already won over the crowd with her previous on-court interview. During her quarter-final, the play was halted for a few minutes as a fan was in distress. After the match, Gauff said she was ready to help if the fan needed CPR treatment.
