With Pegula and Navarro struggling, are Fritz and Tiafoe America's best hope at the US Open?

The Big Apple has reached a boiling point! In 2003, Andy Roddick had us swooning over him as he clinched the US Open title, and now Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz are going in the same direction! Emma Navarro and Jessica Pegula are quickly catching up with them, resulting in a quartet of American players making it to the semifinals in 21 years! It seems optimistic, isn’t it? Well, looking at the historic trend, there is a catch!

Echoing this year’s impressive run of American players in the US Open, over two decades ago, Roddick, Andre Agassi, along with Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport, were all ready to claim the title as they qualified for the semifinals with ease. However, an unexpected twist in the SFs crashed fans’ dreams as Capriati fell short to Justine Henin, and Kim Clijsters demolished Davenport in the women’s semifinals. At the same time, Agassi also couldn’t get past Juan Carlos Ferrero

Fast forward to the 2024 US Open semifinals! One will find Emma Navarro preparing to lock horns with the two-time Australian Open champion, Aryna Sabalenka, while Pegula strives to win against the former World No. 8 Karolina Muchova. Will the American players defy the odds and create a record? If we look at Navarro’s breakthrough season this year, keeping in mind her rise to No. 12 rank along with her first WTA title victory in Hobart, followed by a quarterfinal entry at Wimbledon, going forward in New York seems like an easy task for her.

On the other side, Pegula’s victory in Canada a few weeks ago, coupled with a final-round entry in Cincinnati, keeps the light of hope shining for her in New York as well. On the men’s side, with two-time US Open semifinalist Tiafoe’s and his compatriot Fritz’s entry to the semifinals, there is a guaranteed final-round appearance of an American player in New York. Besides, it will mark the first time an ATP player’s quest for glory in a Grand Slam title match since Roddick’s 2009 Wimbledon final run.

He’s a pretty to-himself kind of dude, and he’s, like,Bro, I think me and you are going to be the 1-2 Americans and leading the way.… I [said] (it’s) 6 a.m., I’m pretty tired, but let’s do it.Why not? He’s kind of had that mindset, and he’s pushed me a lot, you know what I mean?said Tiafoe of Fritz, who defeated Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Sharing a similar reaction to this, Emma Navarro also said a few words!
