Coco Gauff recently pulled off a truly sensational and historical feat on her home soil at the US Open. The American teenager is now the youngest ever to win the major hard-court championship in New York after Serena Williams. The 19-year-old looks like she has now taken the responsibility of carrying on the American tennis legacy carved out by the likes of the Williams sisters.

While many Americans are lauding Gauff for her maiden Grand Slam triumph, her male counterpart and ‘big brother,’ Christopher Eubanks had a hilarious yet taunting reaction. The 27-year-old player recently rubbished his compatriot’s US Open achievement during a spicy banter at the UTS.

The American ATP star previously announced his first appearance in Ultimate Tennis Showdown where players have to choose a nickname for themselves. For his debut at the innovative tennis league, Christopher Eubanks also nicknamed himself “The Rocket” and announced it on his Instagram account.

While many were impressed with his new name, Coco Gauff hilariously declared that she is still going to prefer the same old “giraffe,” given his 6’7″ height. Eubanks was later asked to comment on Gauff’s dig at him, “Coco Gauff, now the US Open champion, commented on it, ‘The rocket is fine as a nickname, but I’m going to stick with the giraffe.’ Your thoughts on that? “

In his on-court interview with the UTS, the American said, “I couldn’t care less what she thinks. I’m okay with how many Grand Slams she wins. I could care less. She’ll be alright.”

Gauff’s male counterpart takes credit for her first major victory

After their poor campaigns in the singles events of the 2018 US Open, Gauff and Eubanks later made headlines in the mixed doubles event. For the first time in her competitive journey, the young WTA player clinched a Grand Slam victory while teaming up with her male counterpart on their home soil. The American pair overcame the third seeds Chan Hao-ching and Henri Kontinen in straight sets in the initial round of the hard court major event.

Reminiscing about the same, Eubanks was recently asked if he is claiming that he helped Gauff to her first Grand Slam win. He jokingly answered, “I mean I didn’t help her. I carried her, I mean my back still hurts to this day from that win back in 2018, but you know, it’s alright it’s water under the bridge now she has a Grand Slaaaaam…”
