Tennis has always been a sport that values silence. There is an unsaid rule in tennis that it is always expected for players to play in quiet conditions. A recent debate has erupted in the tennis world regarding the need for silence during play. The American tennis stars Frances Tiafoe and Coco Gauff have spoken out in favor of playing music during tennis matches.

Coco Gauff spoke about the issue during a recent post-match press conference. Gauff acknowledged that noise can be a factor in a player’s performance.

The young American star mentioned how music can affect the way players track the ball and the sound of it. She pointed out, “I will say I did an exhibition with Ash Barty. We did have some music playing for part of the exhibition. It does affect the way you track the ball and the sound of it, for sure,..” She grew up playing at Pompey Park, where there were always other sports being played and noise in the background. Her father advised her not to complain about the noise during matches.

Frances Tiafoe, the entertaining American tennis star, has also spoken out in support of allowing the audience to talk in the midst of on-court action, as reported by Reuters. Tiafoe believes that tennis needs to change to bring in younger fans. He believes that fans should be able to come and go, move around, and speak during matches, just like they would during a basketball game.

Gauff also explained, “I’ve always said tennis doesn’t need to be completely silent. I’m not the particular player that’s going to complain about the noise. I would welcome it. I don’t know if we could do full-blasting music. It’s quite interesting what Frances said. I think it would be more enjoyable for the fans.”
