Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter went from no to maybe to relationship goals. There was a coffee date proposal from the Aussie in 2020, which the Brit initially declined. But de Minaur lives with the same tenacity off the court as he does on it. He asked again and received a maybe. And after the coffee date? Boulter said she was in “for the long haul”. And now, 5 years later, the couple is engaged to be married. From the stands to social media, they’re always in each other’s corners and cracking jokes while they’re at it.

Alex de Minaur has been busy making moves at the Madrid Open. He beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6(3) to book his spot in the fourth round. It wasn’t easy. Shapovalov hit 23 winners, but de Minaur stayed steady and clever, mixing things up and finding his way through. That win tied him with Carlos Alcaraz for a Tour-leading 24 wins this season. Meanwhile, Katie Boulter entered her tournament unseeded and battled her way past Katerina Siniakova with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback win. Her run ended in the next round against Jasmine Paolini, who beat her 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, Boulter teamed up with Daria Kasatkina, but the pair crashed out in the opener.

However, the Brit didn’t miss a chance to watch her fiancé play. She was seen in the stands, cheering as de Minaur cruised past Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 6-3. But while she loves watching him play, she seems to have one tiny issue: his shorts. The Aussie tennis star shared photos from his match against Shapovalov with the caption, “shorts are getting shorter.” That was enough for Boulter to drop into the comments with a cheeky reply: “Ffs we’ve talked about this, stop showing the goods to everyone.”

This isn’t the first time she’s poked fun at his outfit either. Earlier this month at the Monte Carlo Masters, de Minaur had a great run, reaching the quarterfinals. He stunningly beat Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16. After the match, he posted, “Step by step 🧱👀 QF 🔜 @rolexmontecarlomasters.” But instead of praising the win, Boulter zoomed in on the fashion choice again. “Not sure the short shorts are a win tho,” she wrote.

They don’t just exchange playful jabs online. Sometimes, life throws in some comedy of its own.

Katie Boutler jokingly calls Alex de Minaur a red flag

Recently, a massive power outage swept across Spain, Portugal, and parts of Europe. Alex De Minaur’s match, originally scheduled for Monday, was postponed. The outage caused all kinds of disruptions: transport stopped, communication services crashed, and many were cut off from the internet. That included de Minaur.

Later that day, once his phone got a signal, the Aussie finally updated everyone. “Don’t mind this off-the-grid thing. On the 3rd walk of the day and finally got some service to check on the rest of the world,” he posted on X.  Boulter didn’t let that one slide either. She replied, “Imagine blaming a country blackout for not texting me back all day. Elite (red flag) behaviour.”

On the tennis front, de Minaur is now set to face Lorenzo Musetti in the Round of 16 in Madrid—a rematch from Monte Carlo, where Musetti stopped him in the quarterfinals. It’s shaping up to be a tough challenge. As for Boulter, her next stop is Rome. She’ll be in action at the Italian Open, starting May 6th. Love, laughs, and tennis—this duo seems to have it all.
