Does Stefanos Tsitsipas need to break free from his father's influence to reach his full potential?

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ relationship with his father, Apostolos, is not your standard father/son blood connection. The latter also acts as his coach and there have been several controversies in the past relating to the Tsitsipas duo. The one person who has watched the action unfold closely from the player’s box, Stefanos Tsitsipas’ girlfriend, Paula Badosa, doesn’t involve herself in the chaos.

The number one reason is because Apostolos has been caught on several occasions coaching his son during matches, which is not allowed on the ATP Tour. As a result, Stefanos has also been handed penalties for such actions. And it’s not missed by Badosa, who often attends her boyfriend’s matches.

In fact, the couple is are often seen playing in the same tournaments and attending each other’s matches. When Tsitsipas is playing, Badosa gets to witness their antics from close range. During a recent interview, she was asked what it was like to be in Tsitsipas’ box, especially when he and his father were having a go at one another. Badosa mentioned, “I’m used to it (laughs). It’s part of the gig. It’s a daily thing for them. I just take a step back & prefer to stay away.”

Meanwhile, talking about Tsitsipas’ father, a concerning visual emerged earlier this year. During the Indian Wells tournament, both Badosa and Tsitsipas’ father were present in the player’s box to cheer for the Greek star. However, tensions erupted after Badosa gave a side stare to Tsitsipas’ father, who was sitting at a distance from her. Nonetheless, Tsitsipas has time and again revealed how important working with his father has been. Vulnerability once gripped him at the mere thought of working without his father.

Despite the chaos, Stefanos Tsitsipas has formed an unbreakable bond with his father

He once said, “Me and my father always shared tennis and it was something in common, something of ours. When he’s not there, I feel like a part of my identity as a player is lost. There have been times in the past when he wasn’t with me and I felt like half a player.”

Although Tsitsipas candidly revealed that sometimes they don’t speak nicely to each other, the father-son duo share an unbreakable bond which goes a long way in their professional relationship. The two will look for another success together as Tsitsipas takes on Novak Djokovic in the Olympics quarterfinal later today. It’ll be interesting to see if the Greek star can finish on the podium in Paris.
