‘She Crashed My Party’- Stan Wawrinka Says He’s Sad to See Serena Williams Retire

Serena Williams has inspired generations over her incredible career that has seen her dominate the women’s circuit for over twenty years. Despite her unprecedented success on the tour, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has always had a warm, supporting, and cheerful aura around her.

Not only tennis fans but her opponents and fellow tennis professionals also love and respect her. Therefore, now that Williams has decided to start a new phase of her life, the entire tennis fraternity wants to cherish her last tour and everyone has something or other to say about the legend. Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam champion, recently spoke about Williams’ contribution to the game and how he feels about her retirement. He said, “I think she’s been amazing. For the tennis, for the fans, for everybody who’s involved a little bit in sports in general.”

“I have always been a big fan with many big moments during our career. And it’s going to be, of course, sad to see her leaving after US Open.” The former world no.3 added.

Thereafter, when asked about his favorite Serena Williams moment, Wawrinka responded, “There is many, but I cannot tell (smiling).” But eventually he revealed one. “I think 2015 we celebrate French Open together, and she crashed my party after the win. It was quite fun.”

The Swiss professional on Monday walked out of the Cincinnati Masters after a 6-7(3) 7-5 5-7 defeat against the British tennis ace and former World No.1 Andy Murray.

Williams’ comeback

When Serena made a comeback in the Wimbledon Championships, she ran the risk of becoming unranked for the first time in over twenty years. However, she took it to play her favorite Grand Slam tournament for the last time.

Williams was just two match wins away from sharing the milestone of 100 victories at the hallowed turfs of Wimbledon with veteran Martina Navratilova. If she was not to lose in the opening round, she would have become the only active player other than Roger Federer to do so.

However, the legendary American had a disappointing return to the tour, suffering a first-round defeat against Harmony Tan. Now that she has announced her retirement, the US Open will be her final chance to equal the all time record of Margaret Court, in terms of Grand Slam victories.
