Tennis and fashion have always played doubles. From Andre Agassi’s rebellious denim shorts to Maria Sharapova’s iconic Swarovski-studded dress, tennis has long been a catwalk in motion. Now, Gen Z’s very own Coco Gauff is turning heads both on and off the court, with a fashion-forward flair that’s shaking up the sport. At just 21, she’s already created buzz with outfits like a Marvel-inspired bodysuit at the Australian Open and not one but two Miu Miu ensembles at the Oscars Vanity Fair after party. Now, she’s mixing the two, with a new collaboration that merges her sporty roots and luxury taste.

Gauff has been aligned with New Balance since she was just 14 years old. The sportswear brand spotted her potential early and locked her in with a deal that only grew stronger with time. In 2022, the contract was extended by five more years, reportedly becoming one of the most lucrative partnerships in women’s tennis. And now, that alliance has leveled up. Gauff is teaming up with none other than luxury fashion house Miu Miu—owned by the fashion mogul Miuccia Prada—marking a rare crossover between performance gear and couture.

The American tennis starlet who actively consulted on the project was hands-on from start to finish. The design reflects Miu Miu’s Spring 2025 collection, with elements like flyaway collars and rolled-up sleeves. Even the shoes—her custom New Balance Coco CG2s—carry her handwritten signature, blending athleticism with identity.

Talking to Vogue, Gauff broke down her vision and said, “It’s three tournament looks in total. I showed them what silhouettes I like, and we worked around that as a starting point. We were, like, What can we do in tennis that has either never been done or been done very few times? The only time I can think of high fashion on the court was when Off-White partnered with Serena [Williams]. I know Fed[erer] had the Jordan shoe, but not a full outfit. Jannik Sinner has been carrying Gucci when he walks on court, but it’s not a collab.”

That’s high praise considering the fashion legacy she’s referencing. In 2014, Roger Federer joined forces with basketball legend Michael Jordan for the NikeCourt Zoom Vapor RF x Air Jordan 3—a tennis-basketball hybrid that remains one of the most coveted cross-sport kicks. Serena Williams went even bigger in 2018, partnering with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White and Nike for the “Queen” Collection—an artistic homage to her dominance and style. Fast forward to today, and Jannik Sinner is also stirring the pot. At 2024 Roland Garros, the Italian walked on court carrying a one-of-a-kind Gucci duffle bag—created in collaboration with his racquet sponsor, Head.

For Gauff, the Miu Miu x New Balance debut is set to make waves at the Italian Open on May 7. She’ll be sporting the looks not only in Rome, but also in Berlin and Cincinnati through August. The Italian Open marks a special milestone too—it’ll be the first time a luxury fashion house founded in Italy is officially worn on court during a WTA event.

The One Fashion Milestone Coco Gauff Hasn’t Hit Yet

Coco Gauff’s influence is already strong on platforms like TikTok, where she’s known for her “Get Ready With Me” videos. Her style, as she describes it, plays with “femininity and masculinity,” balancing edgy cuts with polished details. But despite her presence in fashion, there’s one thing the American tennis star hasn’t done yet.

However, despite being such a strong influence in fashion, she’s never attended a fashion show! In the same Vogue interview, she said, “Not one! It is something I want to do. I feel like, when I was younger, it just wasn’t the right spotlight for me. But now I’m trying to branch out more.”

Back on court, however, things haven’t been quite as glamorous. Gauff has a 14-6 win-loss record this season, with only five wins in the last three months. She’s now eyeing a turnaround at the Madrid Open. It’s her fifth appearance at the tournament, with her best finishes being round-of-16 exits in both 2022 and 2024. She’ll open her campaign against either Dayana Yastremska or a qualifier.
