When Roger Federer announced his retirement news to his family, his wife was in tears. “It was obviously very emotional. It’s only afterwards where I started to realize how much Mirka had been suffering,” the Swiss maestro later admitted. There wasn’t a single dry eye in London at the Laver Cup 2022, including Federer’s. But it was when he saw his other half holding back tears that he broke down completely and hugged her tightly. It was the end of an era, and Mirka Federer had been by her husband’s side throughout.

In his latest documentary venture, ‘FEDERER: Twelve Final Days’, the retired pro ups the emotional factor as he relives his last tournament in the sport that was once synonymous with Roger Federer. The King was retiring. His peers had turned on the waterworks, the audience was howling, and Federer was thanking his wife for all the support in a barely held together voice. “She could have stopped me a long, long time ago but she didn’t. She kept me going and allowed me to play, it’s amazing, thank you,” the former World No. 1 uttered through tears.

Revisiting that emotionally charged day in his documentary, which is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on June 20th, a clip shows just how much Mirka Federer influenced Roger Federer. “I think there are really two only I realized that would trigger me and that was Mirka and then the Rafa angle.

He saw his tennis life with Mirka flash before his eyes as she hugged him and spoke about the pivotal role she played in his career. Roger Federer also got sentimental about the emotions he went through at that moment, “Even though I did feel I was solid, you know through the interviews and everything, even through the game, I was super relaxed. And then I don’t know at the end it was just you know it’s like okay I mean this is it and you know what happens next.

The film, originally meant as a memento for his family, was never meant to be made public. But the finished product was too good to keep away from fans hungry for a glimpse of their favorite. In addition to the import players in Federer’s life, Mirka, usually prefering to stay outside the limelight, speaks on her husband’s long due retirement.

But she never discouraged him from traveling around the world. “I hear stories, you know, some guys don’t get allowed to travel maybe three, four weeks on the stretch in a row somewhere. The only request she had is we can spend as much as time as possible together, which is what I wanted anyway,” Roger Federer added.

Mirka Federer is known for usually keeping a low profile, and she very rarely steps into the limelight.
