Tonight’s Laureus Awards promise a showdown between tennis titans!  Novak Djokovic is hot on the heels of his former rival Roger Federer, trailing just one award behind him in the race for Sportsman of the Year. With four titles already in his pocket, ‘Djoker’ is nominated to fight for the fifth one this year alongside the likes of Athletics’ Mondo Duplantis, Football’s Lionel Messi, and Motor Racing’s Max Verstappen. But the biggest question is: will the 24-time Grand Slam champion change history by becoming the tennis player holding the most number of titles?

The World No. 1 demonstrated his supremacy in the tennis world in 2019 by winning his fourth Sportsman of the Year title. Last year, even though Djokovic lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, his continued dominance on the court was demonstrated by his three Grand Slam event victories. Then, at the forthcoming Laureus Sports Awards Ceremony in Madrid, he could tie the legendary Federer for most Sportsman of the Year award. However, he will still be standing one award (Comeback of the Year) behind Federer overall.

In one of the interviews post the nominations in February this year, Novak also highlighted how all four of his awards are very special and unforgettable in their own way. “I am thrilled to be nominated once again for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. I have won this Award four times, and each one has been very special and unforgettable in its own way. It’s an honor unlike any other because it’s the Laureus Academy who make the decision, and they know what it’s like to reach the summit of their sport, and what it takes to stay there.”

Interesting Fact: Tennis is the most awarded sport at the Laureus Awards, having won 11 out of 22(50%) Sportsman of the Year nominations. Djokovic(4) and Federer(5) have together garnered 9 of those titles. However, Rafael Nadal having only won two of such titles despite winning 22 Grand Slam singles titles, demonstrating the competitive nature of the Laureus Awards in the tennis field.

If “Djoker” clinches the coveted Sportsman of the Year 2024 award, he will become the twelfth tennis man to have won the award since its inception, solidifying his position as the most decorated male tennis player in Laureus history.

Moreover, the current World Number one shared his thoughts on being nominated for the Sportsman of the Year award, all while congratulating his fellow nominees from crosssports.
