While neither player has even reached the legal drinking age, the speculations surrounding them as one of the greatest of the game have already come into the picture. Coco Gauff’s recent run in women’s tennis has been nothing short of remarkable. At a young age, she has displayed incredible skill and maturity on the court. Her forehand, in particular, has left a lasting impression on fans and experts. Comparing Gauff’s era to that of tennis legend Steffi Graf, Mark Petchy can’t help but notice the differences.

The sport has evolved significantly since Graf’s retirement. The speed of the game, the level of competition, and the technology have all advanced. This evolution makes direct comparisons between eras challenging.

“I don’t think we have seen a better athlete in women’s tennis and that’s something that going to be a problem for a lot of players out there,” said Petchy, declaring Gauff to be the best athlete in women’s tennis.

Comparing the teenager to the legendary Steffi Graf, he said, “You cannot tell me that tennis…was played with the same speed back then. The sport has moved on and I don’t think we kind try and compare the current generation of players with Goats cause we can’t do it. They were phenomenal in their era. I think Steffi was the best in her era.”

On the men’s side, Carlos Alcaraz has captured the attention of tennis enthusiasts with his steady rise. What sets Alcaraz apart is not just his physicality but also his mental attitude. He radiates a pure enjoyment of performing on the court that is rare among champions.

In a recent tweet, the former coach of Serena Williams came ahead to talk about how Carlos Alcaraz is creating a magic that the tennis world has never seen before.

When we witness young talents like Gauff and Alcaraz making waves, it’s natural to become captivated by their achievements and wonder if they are the best. However, in tennis, this bias can influence our perception of greatness.

Recency bias or rational thinking: What best describes the current tennis scenario?

This bias is not unique to tennis, over the years with the introduction of a new generation, there are high chance that the recency bias will be a common thing in the game. But then, there is one question that arises. Is recency bias accurate or should rational thinking also be done?

With the form that both the players are in at the moment, there are chances that they will make it big in their careers as professional players.

However, the bias can be a result of the recent performances that the players have displayed on the courts. With 1 grand slam for Coco Gauff and 2 for Carlos Alcaraz at just 20, the form that they have displayed, it is only wonders that they can achieve. Nonetheless, they are still young in their careers. It would be better to rationally think about the same given the legacy that the ‘Big 3’ and Serena Williams have established.

The current grand slam count that the youngsters have is nowhere close to the legacy that they have written in the sport. Thus, it would be better to give them some more time to adapt to the modern dynamics before making a big call for the sport.

Moreover, with the change in the dynamics of the game with each generation, the players who have a good knack for adaptability have displayed outrageous performances on the courts. So, instead of pitting athletes from different eras against each other, we should appreciate the uniqueness of each generation of players.
