Federer's elegance vs. Djokovic's records—who's the real GOAT in your eyes?

When the tennis stars speak their minds, sparks fly! Camila Giorgi, who retired from the sport a few months ago, has reignited a fiery debate on the long-standing battle of who is the G.O.A.T of the two giants of the game, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic! While players often struggle to choose between the two (or rather 3 if you throw in Nadal too), the former Italian player’s confession has blown the lid off the debate. Buckle up as we dive into her simple yet decisive answer to the question!

Following her abrupt decision to take a retirement from tennis, Camila Giorgi sent a shockwave among her fans in May. Little did we know that her battle against the Polish star, Iga Swiatek, at the Miami Open was the last we would see her play. But it seems she has not entirely abandoned her favorite sport. In a recent Q&A session on her social media, the former World No. 26 answered the hot topic of tennis, which has been brewing in the sport for a long time. “Federer o Djokovic?” Camila Giorgi’s swift and sweet response was “Federer.”

Naturally, this has sent her fans into a frenzy, who are guessing the potential reason behind her statement. If we look at their careers, Giorgi started out in tennis in 2006, eight years after her idol’s entry into the sport. However, success came quite rapidly to the Swiss maestro, as he got his first break after winning the Wimbledon title at the age of 21.

On the contrary, Camila Giorgi’s career graph took a long time to reach the highest point, where she first reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon almost twelve years after turning pro. Nevertheless, her flat groundstrokes and aggressive style of play make her one of the finest hitters of the ball in tennis. And if one looks at the 20 time Grand Slam champion’s style of play, it is similarly aggressive as well!

Giorgi’s philosophy of playing does coincide with Federer a bit, but her bold choice on the matter indeed came as a shock to her fans. But now the 32-year-old former player has bid adios to her tennis endeavors, just like Federer himself. However, her future plans in life are as bright as sunshine!

“There have been many rumors about my future plans, so I hope to provide more information about the interesting opportunities I will have in the future,” Camila Giorgi, who reached the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, said after the announcement of her retirement. Luckily, she didn’t have to wait much longer. Her Instagram account, with over 739K followers, is the witness! Giorgi, who started playing tennis at age 5, once expressed her dream of becoming a fashion designer or a writer post-retirement.

“Fashion has always been my great passion. I like sports a lot, but I like fashion more. An obsession that has been passed on to me since I was a child.” And when the time came, she chose to the former, as she proudly boasts her own clothing line, Giomila. On her Instagram, she often posts pictures wearing custom-made clothes, which are designed by her mother Claudia. Camila Giorgi’s current adventure is far away from her sporting endeavors. But if she stays connected to her fans, frequently giving a glimpse of her outlook on the sport, it will indeed be a treat for her admirers!
