Djokovic and Osaka ruling TikTok—Is this the future of tennis stardom?

When Chicago-based TikTok content creator, Jools Lebron said ‘Very Demure .. Very Mindful’, little did she know that it would take the internet by storm. “Your demure is what it means to you. It’s being mindful and considerate of the people around you, but also of yourself and how you present to the world,” Jools told “CBS Mornings.” Lebron’s video of the ‘Demure’ trend went viral beyond her 2 Million subscribers and it has reached the tennis world as well. A while ago, tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka joined the popular trend.

The Serbian superstar shared a video of him during a training session at the US Open while the ‘Very Demure .. Very Mindful’ track played in the background. The 24-time Grand Slam champion could be seen undergoing various training regimes while being ‘very demure, very mindful’ about his physical fitness at the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. Similarly, Naomi Osaka wasn’t left far behind in this regard.

On August 25, the ‘de Minaur'(reads Demure) TikTok trend took center stage at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in New York, as a group of top tennis players participated in the viral challenge. The trend involves a demure, shy, and cool swing, inspired by Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur.

When asked about the meaning behind ‘de Minaur,’ Andrey Rublev explained that it’s a reference to de Minaur’s last name, and that the words ‘shy’ and ‘cool’ can have various interpretations. Rublev and Denis Shapovalov attempted a one-swing version, with Rublev adding a touch of attitude.

Casper Ruud opted for a more concise swing, while Nick Kyrgios emphasized the shyness aspect with a restrained swing and exit. Stefanos Tsitsipas fully embraced the trend with a highly demure performance. However, it was de Minaur himself who delivered the most authentic rendition. He turned his body, executed a slow-motion forehand, and maintained direct eye contact with the camera, radiating confidence and self-awareness.

“The inspiration that fueled the look for me — and this might be a Japanese term — is feeling like a ‘magical girl’ on the court. There’s a moment of transformation for me when I walk onto the court, and I have a lot of fun playing, so wanting everyone who sees the outfit to connect with that feeling is a really big motivation for me.”

Both Osaka and Djokovic have had smooth sailing thus far in the US Open. While the Serb is in the third round of the tournament, Osaka will face Karolina Muchova in the second round later today.
