She was only a 17-year-old young athlete when she was unconsciously assaulted by her father. Prior to that, Dokic also suffered from poverty, racism, and bullying, adding to the array of traumas she had already gone through.
However, despite all these challenges, the 40-year-old tennis star has often shown remarkable courage in constantly sharing personal and traumatic details of her journey. Now, once again, the world No. 4 player didn’t hold herself back from detailing her inspirational story in an effort to eradicate all stigma related to mental health issues. Taking note of the same, the Serbian tennis legend, Novak Djokovic expressed his admiration for her courage.

The 40-year-old tennis star’s inspirational social media post received a lot of admiration from the public with the currently ranked world No. 1 player, Novak Djokovic among those to like it. Jelena Dokic has always been blunt in sharing all the intricacies of her traumatic upbringing under the control of her allegedly abusive father.
It was also quite evident in her recent Instagram post in which she detailed how she had to face the media after she was unconsciously assaulted by her father. While detailing the distressing story, she also shared a photo of herself looking dejected when she was just 17 confronting the media in New York.
However, the former tennis player turned her wounds into wisdom and strength as her traumatic past made her the ‘proud’ woman that she is today. Notably, Dokic stated in the caption of her post, “It’s made me who I am today and I am proud of that. So just know that: Behind every strong, brave, and independent woman lies a broken little girl who had to learn how to get back up and to never depend on anyone.”

Jelena Dokic also revealed how she had to deal with her father’s public and drunken outbursts while all the cameras were on her. Apart from this, the Aussie also revealed that she has often been a target of public scrutiny and body shaming on social media.

The Aussie also asserted that it is necessary to remove all the shame around publicly speaking about our thoughts and feelings. Dokic has made it clear that there is a need to have more open conversations about mental health issues.
She now considers it her duty to speak up and avoid being silenced by societal pressure. Dokic is continuing to make efforts to assist others in doing the same because she feels that working together will make a far bigger impact.
