Should sports media focus more on athletes' skills rather than their appearance? What's your take?

On Thursday, Barbora Krejcikova upset Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach the 2024 WTA Finals Riyadh semifinals. Despite offering a tough fight to China’s Qinwen Zheng in the Semis, Krejcikova’s facial appearance made headlines. It came from the Tennis journalist Jon Wertheim. During the Tennis Channel’s live broadcast of the doubles semifinals, Wertheim said, “What do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova. Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and Zheng take the court.” After the comments sparked controversy, angering both Krejcikova and her fans, now, Nick Kyrgios has weighed in.

Kyrgios unleashed his trademark bluntness on X, calling Wertheim’s comment “Embarrassing.” A fan’s attempt to criticize Kyrgios, “Bro you from the same cloth stfu”, backfired when the Australian fired back, “Who the f*** is that guy, very relevant here lol.” The controversy has developed significantly since its inception.

Krejčíková also noticed how her appearance was subjected to humor by a known tennis journalist. Expressing disapproval of such a lack of professionalism, the Czechia player took to her social media and wrote, “You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional (cont.).” She didnt stop there!

Krejcikova came with a follow-up post, “2/3 commentary. This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media. These moments distract from the true essence of (cont.).” If you think that’s all, she isn’t done yet.

Krejcikova wrapped up her statement with a heartfelt tweet, saying, “3/3 sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field. I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honors the commitment we make to compete at this level.” Soon after, the renowned journalist issued multiple apologies on different platforms.

Wertheim issued an apology for his offensive remarks on Barbora Krejcikova

In a dramatic turn of events on November 10th, Wertheim took to X to apologize for his offensive remarks, admitting his wrongdoing and vowing to learn from the experience. “I realize: I am not the victim here. It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry.” Jon wasn’t done yet!

Roddick attempted to defend Wertheim in an emergency podcast, beginning the show with “Our good friend, my co-host, my partner-in-crime Jon Wertheim said something on a hot mic. No one was aware they were on a hot mic. I know he is as a person. I also know he stepped in sh-t. I said we have to come on and acknowledge it, even when it’s not comfortable.

Wertheim issued a formal apology for his recent comments, acknowledging the severity of his actions and expressing deep remorse. He admitted that his remark, intended as self-deprecating humor, was insensitive and caused unnecessary distress to Krejcikova. “I’m full of regret, remorse, and an apology…She doesn’t need this shit. “Honestly, she won Wimbledon. She had a great season. She just finished up a nice tournament in Riyadh,” said Jon. With Wertheim’s multiple apologies, the situation seems to have calmed down for now.
