Wimbledon, often considered to be the most prestigious tournament in tennis, has shocked the fraternity with its new announcement. Every year Wimbledon has seen a consistent increase in prize money. However, in 2023, the prize money is about to reach its peak.
The players are always eager to compete in the Championship regardless of the prize money. Last year, when Wimbledon did not provide any tour-level points, we barely saw any withdrawals. Its rich history and prize money will always encourage the players to participate in the main draw.
Wimbledon’s historic prize money announcement

The All England Club has just announced a record prize of ?44,700,000 (56,469,510 USD) for the 2023 championships. That is a whopping 11.2% increase from 2022, during which the allocated prize money was ?40,350,000. If we compare it to the pre-pandemic numbers from 2019, Wimbledon has seen a 17.1% raise in prize money in the last 4 years. The ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles champion will receive a record prize of ?2,350,000. On the other hand, the singles runner-up will receive 50% of the winners’ amount, which is ?1,175,000.
In addition to that, we will see an increase in prize money for the qualifying rounds as well. Players losing in the opening round of the main draw received ?50,000?last year. This amount has been increased to ?55,000?now after a 10% increase. Wimbledon has also increased the prize money for the doubles section by 10.7% while the wheelchair singles and doubles have seen an increase of close to 20% from last year.

Wimbledon is still behind the US Open in terms of prize money
Despite announcing its record prize money, Wimbledon still lags behind the American slam. In fact, the US Open became the first slam to breach the $60 million?mark in tennis last year. US Open only saw a 4% increase in its prize from that of 2021, but it still stands clear of Wimbledon.

However, Wimbledon’s prize money for the singles winner will be more than that of what Carlos Alcaraz or Iga Swiatek received for winning the US Open last year. The singles champions received $2,600,000?for winning the US Open, which is less compared to what Wimbledon has announced for its 2023 champions (more than $2,900,000).
