In the women’s draw at the French Open 2022, 28-year-old Italian, Martina Trevisan shocked everyone by reaching the semi-final. Today, she won her quarter-final match against 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez to reach her first-ever semi-final in a Grand Slam tournament. 

After the match, she revealed one interesting information about her name. According to her, the name came from a famous tennis player, and many consider her one of the greatest ever tennis players, if not the greatest.

 Martina Trevisan talks about Martina Navratilova’s influence on her name 

After beating Leylah Fernandez, Trevisan talked about the significance of her name. “My mum gave me that name for Navratilova for sure. No pressure, but I like it,” she revealed

Notably, the Czechoslovakian-American tennis legend, Navratilova, won 18 Grand Slam titles and won the most number of matches in the history of tennis. The exact reason Trevisan joked about not feeling any kind of pressure, as she reached only her first Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros.

It is worth noting that Trevisan reached the quarter-final at the French Open in 2020. So, this result will definitely please her more than anything. After 2 hours and 21 minutes of intense battle, Trevisan won the match by 6-2 6-7(3) 6-3. Now, the Italian player will play American teenager, Coco Gauff, in the semi-final, who is also incidentally playing her first semi-final in Paris. 

Several surprising results at the French Open 2022

Along with Martina Trevisan, many players also surprised fans and experts in both men’s and women’s draws. In women’s draws, apart from Iga Swiatek, no other top 10 players made it to the last eight. Two Russian unseeded tennis players, Veronika Kudermetova and Daria Kasatkina, also reached the quarter-final.

In the men’s draw, Danish player Holger Rune surprised everyone by overcoming the no.4 seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in the fourth round. Also, we saw the no.2 seed, Daniil Medvedev, crash out in the fourth round after losing to Marin Cilic.

Now, Rune will play Casper Ruud in the quarter-final. Certainly, it will be a great opportunity for him to reach his first Grand Slam semis. However, one thing is for sure, we will have a new finalist at the French Open this year. On the other hand, Iga Swiatek is still looking like the favorite in the women’s draw to win the tournament.
