Tennis is a global sport that is loved by many. However, like any other sport, the stringent rules can not be ignored. Though it might sound a bit complicated initially, these technicalities and rules make the sport fair for all. Consequently, the rules of the sport are implemented by trained professionals, i.e. line judges and chair umpires. Chair umpires reprimand players for their on-court indiscipline and disruption of rules, but when it comes to punishing umpires the International Tennis Integrity Agency takes over. This was recently the case with a Dominican umpire who faced serious repercussions.

Tennis cannot function in the desired manner if the umpire does not stick to the rules. This is exactly what a tennis umpire from the Dominican Republic did. Fabian Carrero now faces a lifetime ban from the sport. He committed 16 breaches of the anti-corruption program of tennis. And this did not happen in one match.

It happened across eight matches in the tournaments held in the Dominican Republic from November 2019 to December 2019. The International Tennis Integrity Agency stated Carrero, with the aid of a handheld device, manipulated the scoring “to facilitate guaranteed betting wins on specific points.”

The issue garnered the attention of the agency, and it suspended the coach from the sport.
