Certain players develop an appearance that usually becomes a part of their character. Some are known for their attire, while some are remembered for their playing style. For example, the likes of Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer were known widely for playing with a one-handed backhand, and the reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova for her tattoos. Similarly, players’ hairstyles also become a vital part of their character.
Coco Gauff does fall under this category. Her long braids have been a part of her identity for quite some time now. Even during her matches, she plays with long braids, which surprisingly never really affected her momentum. However, it seems like the time has come for a change.

In the ongoing Citi Open, Gauff is not playing with braids anymore. She has tied them up and now she has a completely distinct look. It may not have any impact on her game, but it does give her a new appearance, something which the fans have not been familiar with. In the post-match press conference, she was also asked about the switch from braids.
While tackling the question, Gauff said, ” The new hairstyle was definitely not a plan of the new era. Honestly, I wanted to try this, and I got tired of braids all the time. I like to change up my hair. I have tried color in the past with the braids and everything, but I just needed something different.” Alongside a change in her team and coach, she has also decided to change her hairstyle.
The World No.7 further added, “This is going to be it for US Open. But yeah, probably post-US Open I’m going to go back to the braids, because when I go to Europe, I need something that’s easier to maintain.” Well, so the change in hairstyle might not really be permanent. As of now, it happens to be a temporary change.
As we focus on braids, Gauff’s idol, Serena Williams, was also famous for them back in her days of dominance.
Serena Williams’ braid days
Serena was famous for her braids in the early 2000s. Despite making regular changes later in her career, the 23-time major champion is still remembered for her braids. In fact, her first few Slam victories came during her braid era.

But even Serena would often switch her hairstyles and Gauff is looking to follow her idol’s footsteps, as she plans to make adjustments again in Europe.
