Every second counts… stop wasting time! Tennis bigwigs join hands to address the same burning issue in the tennis world. Like baseball (not counting the pitch clock), tennis isn’t bound by a timepiece ticking away. Here, the match isn’t over until a player wins two or more sets. However, unnecessary stoppages or intentional delays can sometimes cause prolonged game time.

This can at times prove to be too costly to players. They suffer fatigue, cramps, or severe dehydration. Recently in Rome, Coco Gauff‘s coach, Brad Gilbert expressed his disappointment after seeing Paula Badosa catching the ball multiple times during her serve during the R16 match. Even John McEnroe was spotted echoing the same point recently in Paris.

A Twitter user (supposedly a Nole fan) recently shared a post surrounding a comment from John McEnroe. He perhaps has taken it from Novak Djokovic‘s recent match at the Roland Garros. The fan wrote, “McEnroe making a great point on commentary about the ball toss. ‘You got 4 seconds left, toss the ball, catch it, and they don’t call you on it! I don’t get it!’ I don’t get it either, John.” Although it wasn’t clear who he was referring to here, this has recently been a major controversial issue concerning the tennis world.

Last month Coco Gauff’s coach faced major flak from the fans for highlighting this issue on his Twitter account. He wrote, “You have heard me say this so many times, catching your on ball toss on serv is should not be allowed.” Gilbert went on to add, “How can u catch 3 tosses in a row and not at least get time violation is beyond ridiculous, also allowing 45 catches in a match and nothing in rules is mind-boggling. And such disadvantage to returner.

Brad Gilbert is someone who loves to speak his mind, and he has been very vocal about multiple incidents in the past. Recently he was also spotted backing John McEnroe’s take on the French Open‘s “crazy” Rafael Nadal decision.

The 65-year-old American tennis legend, John McEnroe heavily criticized the French Open for their treatment of the 14-time French Open winner. He believes that there is no way Rafael Nadal should be playing his first match in his potentially last French Open tournament against the world no.4 Alexander Zverev. He said, “It doesn’t make sense for someone who has won 14 times not to be seeded. It’s the way the tournament has always acted. It’s crazy to me, It’s the most interesting first round of a major that I can remember and the toughest of the Open Era for someone like Nadal.

Coco Gauff’s coach Brad Gilbert backed McEnroe’s statement by tweeting, “Didn’t see a lot of Vamos-Rafa match definitely had chances in 2nd set, still feel like he deserved to be seeded like 20th and could work way into (the) tournament. Who knows about what the result could have been, just my 2 cents.” He believes Nadal making a deep run in the tournament would’ve indeed benefitted both the tournament and the Spaniard himself.
