Is Jannik Sinner's $6 million win a sign of tennis losing its competitive integrity?

Jannik Sinner won half of what he earned throughout the year in just three days at the Six Kings Slam! He defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling showdown by 6(5)-7,6-3,6-3 to become the first Six Kings Slam champion on Saturday. With this emphatic triumph, he has now grabbed a whopping $6 million as the prize money for the tournament. What do tennis experts say about this staggering amount earned by Sinner for playing just a few days of tennis? Recently, Serena Williams’ former coach Rennae Stubbs looked a bit unfazed when she was quizzed about Sinner pocketing millions.

The tournament reportedly guaranteed $1.5 million to each of the participating players. Now, if we take a look at the earnings of Jannik Sinner, he has earned almost double what he made from two major title triumphs this season. Sinner won $2.1 million at the AO earlier this season. A few months later, he won another $3.6 million for his 2024 US Open triumph. Now, with just three victories at the Six Kings Slam, he earned $6 million. Just to put it into perspective, he has made $12,032,935 from this season so far.

Speaking about Jannik Sinner hitting the jackpot in Saudi Arabia on ‘The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast’, the 53-year-old Aussie legend claimed she didn’t watch a lot of tennis over the last week. However, she stated, “I did watch a little bit of tennis, not a lot of it. Just felt like the Six Kings thing like ‘Who cares?’ I mean Sinner won $6 million, like he beat I mean Alcaraz in the finals. He has been a better player on the faster courts okay, I get into the reasons why but do I really care? No, I don’t, I really don’t care.

We have seen Stubbs heaping praise on Jannik Sinner multiple times in the past. Her fondness for this young lad is so extreme that in February this year, she even claimed Sinner is “like the same version” of tennis legend Novak Djokovic due to the completeness of his game. Even in December last year, she praised Jannik Sinner’s on-court performance as well as his charisma off the court. However, this time it was a bit different, Stubbs didn’t want to spend too many words on his recent triumph.

Stubbs has criticized Saudi Arabia’s investments in tennis before. Although she didn’t speak much on this topic, her reactions clearly explained she isn’t too excited. For example, in September 2023, she mocked Indian Wells’ future buyers stating, “The Saudis buying this too.” Then in May this year, when WTA announced a multi-year partnership with Saudi Arabia’s PIF, Rennae Stubbs reacted to that news negatively saying, “No words.

So, this kind of gives us an indication of why she is a bit unfazed by what happened in Six Kings Slam. But that’s her take? What do other tennis experts say about Jannik Sinner‘s staggering prize money from this tournament?

Not only Rennae Stubbs but also American legend, Andy Roddick didn’t have pleasant words for what recently happened at the Six Kings Slam. Roddick previously claimed this exhibition tournament was a “marketing budget” for the government. He further explained this tournament as if, “Someone’s going to pay you that amount of money, and you have to go do awkward dancing… It just looked weird.

Interestingly, despite being one of the most popular tennis players in the world, Roger Federer was never offered such a big amount of prize money in any tournament. This has indeed raised a few eyebrows in the tennis world. Did the lavish payout in Six Kings Slam impress Andy Roddick? Well, in reply to this, Roddick said, “I had no interest in it.”
