Stefanos Tsitsipas has been one of the most consistent, yet underachieving players in the last few years. The Greek sensation turned 25 recently and is yet to win a major title. After registering a landmark win over Novak Djokovic in the 2018 Canadian Open, he has failed to live up to the hype. Recently, a German tennis veteran revealed her opinion on why Tsitsipas has been a notorious underachiever despite showing immense promise.

Tsitsipas came close to winning majors when he made it to not one, but two Slam finals. He has also notched up wins over legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at majors. However, his ceiling is much higher than that of an average Slam finalist. How did the German veteran weigh in here?

Stefanos Tsitsipas has plenty of struggles when it comes to the coaching team. His father, Apostolos, has been his primary coach since his breakthrough years. However, the duo hasn’t got along well in recent years. The lack of improvements in his game forced the Greek player to change coaches. He appointed the two-time Grand Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis as his permanent coach recently.

German WTA player Andrea Petkovic had her say on this topic. She said via Tennis 365, “I do feel Tsitsipas needs a change in his – I don’t know if it’s in his coaching team. It’s just, he has stagnated over the last year in his game and I know that he wants to play well. And he has really one of the best forehands I have ever seen in my entire life.

After commenting on the Greek’s forehand, Petkovic drew Roger Federer parallels as well. She believes that his forehand is as complete as that of the Swiss Maestro. Both players use spin, pace, and angles to perfection. However, she also wants him to embrace other elements from Federer’s game. “Maybe incorporates the slice a bit more – like Roger used to do – so he gets the time to run around and use his forehand“, said the former World No. 9.
