Undoubtedly, both Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal have been two of the greatest tennis players in their respective categories. Recently, at the pre-tournament press conference of the US Open, Nadal opened up about the American tennis player’s retirement announcement.

Notably, Serena announced her retirement from the sport through an essay in Vogue Magazine. After that announcement, many fans, and former and current players, have reacted. Now, Nadal also joined the others in praising the American tennis player for her amazing contribution to the sport.

Rafael Nadal talked about Serena Williams’ retirement at the US Open 2022

Earlier at the press conference, Nadal said, I spoke plenty of times about Serena, how important she was, or she is, for our sport. Huge ambassador that break records.

“So from the tennis perspective, it’s a big loss that she is leaving. But on the other hand, she deserved all the things that she achieved because she worked enough to made that happen for such a long time, with a lot of determination, dedication, discipline,” he said further.

“I just believe and hope that if she is able to stay around the sport in some way, going to be great for our sport because always believe that the sports are bigger when the legends of our sport are around the sport, no? And she’s a legend. In some way hope she will continue being involved in the world of tennis,” Nadal further said, hoping that Serena will stay attached to tennis even after retirement. 

Serena is a big fan of Nadal

Earlier, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, both Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal practiced as they were preparing for the US Open. After their individual practice session, both embraced each other on the court, as the massive crowd started cheering.

Previously, at the Wimbledon Championships, Serena supported Nadal, as he was going for his 23rd Grand Slam title. Moreover, Serena named one of her dogs after Nadal, as a testament to her adoration of the Spaniard.

After yesterday’s draw, both players knew about their first-round opponents, as Nadal will start his campaign at the US Open against the Aussie player, Rinky Hijikata. As for Serena, she will face Danka Kovinic in the first round, as she is vying for her 24th Grand Slam title for one last time.
