From a sleepy 6 a.m. coffee meeting to five years of love and laughter, Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter have truly gone from “maybe” to absolute relationship goals! Their story didn’t begin on the court but at a hotel lobby, a serendipitous encounter where sparks quietly flew. The 26-year-old knew from the start he was “in it for the long haul,” and the rest, as they say, is tennis romance history. But even perfect pairs have playful spats! And just as the Brit often gets the last laugh, this time was no exception. Want to know the story?
The drama began on Monday when Alex de Minaur was slated to face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the R32 of the Madrid Open. However, an unexpected massive blackout across Spain and neighboring countries forced several matches, including de Minaur’s, to be postponed to Tuesday. The 7th seed took to X to share his experience, joking, “Don’t mind this off the grid thing 😂😂😂. On the 3rd walk off the day and finally got some service to check on the rest of the world 👀🙏👌🤷♂️.” With no signal for hours, de Minaur wasn’t able to reply to messages, or at least that’s the excuse he gave his beau, Katie Boulter.
But Boulter wasn’t buying it. Quick to seize the moment, she playfully clapped back with a cheeky jab of her own, responding on X, “Imagine blaming a country blackout for not texting me back all day. Elite 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩behavior.” While the internet had a field day with the exchange, Boulter has recently laughed off the playful drama, proving once again that humor and honesty are the cornerstones of their relationship.

Just a couple of moments ago, Katie Boulter took to IG to share a screenshot of the now-viral exchange on X shared by LTA’s official IG handle, where Alex de Minaur had first addressed the blackout drama. In his post, he joked about being “off the grid,” to which the 28-year-old had responded with a series of red flags, calling out his “elite” excuse for not texting her back, while the page captioned it, “No excuses not to text @katiecboulter back, @alexdeminaur 😂🚩.” Sharing the post on her IG story, Katie added a touch of her signature humor, captioning it, “Some days, I just can’t help myself 😅🤦🏼♀️.”

And she’s not wrong! Take last month, for example, the tennis power couple made their mixed doubles debut at the Eisenhower Cup in Indian Wells. Though the outing didn’t go as planned and they lost to defending champions Emma Navarro and Ben Shelton, Katie’s playful spirit remained intact. She posted on IG, “Fun night at @tiebreaktens even though we lost… I guess I’ll keep him 😂.”
Meanwhile, with the blackout saga lighting up social media, de Minaur is keeping his focus on the court. The Aussie has now advanced to the R16 in Madrid, continuing his solid form and handling the off-court jabs from his partner like a true sport.

“Life is surrounded by technology,” Alex de Minaur shared his honest opinion about the blackout in Spain
Alex de Minaur has been making waves at the Madrid Open, continuing his impressive 2025 season. The Aussie booked his place in the 4th round after a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over Canada’s Denis Shapovalov. It was no easy feat; Shapovalov blasted 23 winners, but De Minaur’s composure, clever shot selection, and consistent play helped him navigate the challenge and come out on top.
That victory marked his 24th win of the season, tying him with the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz for the most ATP Tour wins this year: a testament to his red-hot form. But beyond the court, it was the off-court chaos that added a unique twist to his tournament run. The widespread blackout across Spain caused major disruptions, including a full halt to communications. Speaking in his post-match press conference, de Minaur reflected on the unusual experience.
“There wasn’t much we could do, practically your whole life is surrounded by technology,” the Aussie said. “For example, we had no mobile phone coverage, we spent the whole day taking walks with the team, playing cards, we went to the only open Mercadona to grab something to eat, but there was no bread left.”

Yet amidst the inconvenience, de Minaur also found unexpected clarity and joy! The blackout, he explained, helped him reconnect with the world beyond screens. “If there is something I liked about yesterday, it was that, disconnecting a bit from the internet and going outside for a walk, seeing the people of Madrid with their friends, and experiencing the moment more. Lately, we are too hooked on technology, so it was nice to see how yesterday people were going to the park or playing soccer, I’ve even seen videos of people dancing. It was a tough day, but all the Spanish people took it very well,” Alex continued.
Now, as he shifts focus back to tennis, the Aussie prepares for a high-stakes R16 clash against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, a rematch of their Monte Carlo QF, where Musetti had the upper hand. Will the Aussie keep his clay-court momentum alive, or will the Italian strike again? Share your thoughts below!
