Representing the nation in the Olympic Games is always a dream for most athletes, and 37-year-old French tennis star Gael Monfils is no exception. However, he has had several ups and downs in his career so far. Last year he was ranked close to 400 in the world and when was asked about the Olympics, he had said he didn’t see that far but rather wanted to take it one at a time.
Monfils certainly had a tough time last year and recently made an emotional revelation on that phase of his life during a post-match press conference in Monte Carlo. “Well, when I said the last year, I was 400 in the world. But I’m not even thinking about that, because last year I wrote various articles on LinkedIn and I read them recently. And a year ago, I had the impression that people wanted me to quit tennis.”
He went on to add, “People don’t let you believe in your dreams. People don’t know you.” The player said that he always tries to interact with his real fans and he doesn’t need to win 20 tournaments. Instead, he is satisfied with winning less number of matches as he believes only legends are destined to win everything.

“They don’t allow you to say, you know. I’m 36, I’m 400 in the world, and I still want to come back to a good level. Everybody was laughing at me at the time,” the player said. However, the one person who served as the strongest pillar of support for him was fellow tennis star and his wife, Elina Svitlova. The couple have, in the past, often spoken about how they help each other improve and give mental support to each other in the middle of intense professional and personal duties. But what really keeps Gael Monfils going even at this age?
