Rublev had previously reached the QF of the Australian Open thrice in his career (2021,2023 and 2024). This is the first time that Andrey Rublev has lost in the first round of the Australian Open since 2019. After Grigor Dimitrov, he has now become the second Top 10 player to exit from this year’s event. On the other hand, Joao Fonseca has become the second player of the Open Era to defeat a Top-10 player in their first appearance in a Grand Slam.

High in confidence and with hype growing, Joao Fonseca showed everyone what he is capable of in the bigger stages of the game. After wrapping up the match against Rublev in straight sets, Fonseca shared his thoughts on the match. He said, “I just enjoyed every moment on this amazing court, it’s my first time playing in a huge stadium.” He then thanked the crowd for their incredible support and added, “I was trying to not put pressure on myself, playing with a Top 10 guy in a huge stadium. [I was] trying to call the crowd to help me. I just enjoyed playing my game. That’s one thing about myself, is that I play better in the important points, I go for my shots. That was the difference today.
