Spanish tennis sensation, Carlos Alcaraz, was dubbed one of the favorites to clinch the ATP World Tour Finals title. The 20-year-old has exceeded expectations this year and even went on to hold the World Number 1 spot for a few weeks. However, he hasn’t had the start he would’ve liked in Turin. Subsequently, Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, pointed out a big weakness in Alcaraz’s game.
The Spaniard went down fighting against lower-ranked Alexander Zverev on the opening day of the tournament. The ATP World Tour Finals is being played on the indoor courts in Turin. It is not often we see tournaments being played on indoor courts. Turns out, Mouratoglou’s comments about Alcaraz’s weakness had something to do with this rare court type.

Hours ago, the new episode of ‘Eye of the Coach’ dropped where Mouratoglou talked about the young Spaniard’s game. During that episode, he also discussed Alcaraz’s weakness in indoor courts while comparing him to Holger Rune.
Talking about this, Mouratoglou said, “The indoors season is very short. Some players, because of the country they live in, let’s say, for example, Holger, they have played indoors a lot. Him, probably not. So he needs to get used to that surface more than other players.”
A handful of tournaments like the ATP World Tour Finals and the Laver Cup are played on indoor surfaces. Thus, it can get challenging for players to get used to this surface, especially when they have played outdoors for the most part of their careers, like in the case of Alcaraz.
The Spaniard himself wasn’t too pleased with the nature of the surface in his first match in Turin. Following his defeat against Zverev, the former World Number 1 complained about the indoor surface.

What did Alcaraz say about the ATP World Tour Finals court?
The 20-year-old was caught by surprise with how the surface played in his opening match at the year-ending championship. The Spaniard caught a dejected look while complaining about the nature of the surface.
Alcaraz said, “Yeah, I mean, this surface is the fastest on the year, that’s for sure. I don’t know why they put this kind of surface at the end of the year because all the tournaments that we have played on hard court is so, so slow, then we come here to the Masters and they put this court so, fast. I don’t know why.”
