Carlos Alcaraz: The next big thing in tennis or just another overhyped youngster?

Carlos Alcaraz is rapidly climbing the ranks! His journey to becoming a tennis sensation started at a very young age, and his current prowess on the courts is a testament to that early preparation. Defeating Novak Djokovic on grass is no small feat, and Alcaraz has managed to do it twice, both times in the Wimbledon finals. But the story of Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t just start on the professional circuit. Recently, a video from his childhood has been making waves on the internet, captivating the tennis community and beyond. And the latest to express surprise is Chris Evert.

Taking to her Twitter handle, Chris Evert reshared an old video of Alcaraz where he can be seen playing some exceptional tennis on a hard court. The video, originally shared by Spanish Tennis media organisation, Tiempo De Tenis, has already amassed 288.2k views and has caught the attention of several people in the tennis community.

Sharing the video, Evert wrote, “This is incredible…..only 13? With those shots? Really? 🤷‍♀️👏👏👏💪💪💪” The original video source claimed the footage to be from eight years ago when Alcaraz was just 13. The young player can be seen playing some exceptional forehand shots and leaving his opponent baffled. He also pulled out some skillful shots ranging from a soft volley to powerful serves and his opponent can only be seen confused and perplexed. The Spaniard has been long associated with the sport.

Carlos Alcaraz picked up racquets when he was just four at a tennis school that was run by his father. As he grew further, his skills started to amaze many in the arena. He was joined by his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero when he was just 15 and the amalgamation of an early start and extensive practice has made him achieve the success that he is currently witnessing. This, meanwhile, is not the first time when Chris Evert made such a statement for the Spanish sensation.

Speaking to Eurosport in March last year, Evert hinted at the flawless attitude of Alcaraz. “The beauty of his game is that he has no weaknesses whatsoever for any of his opponents to have a chance unless he’s having a bad day.” As Alcaraz’s Wimbledon victory continued to garner him praise, there was one message that surprised even the tennis star.

Winning Wimbledon for the second consecutive time definitely meant widespread praise and congratulatory messages for Carlos Alcaraz. But there was one message that left the Spaniard surprised and it was from none other than F1 star Lewis Hamilton.

When asked if he was surprised to receive any messages like that of Will Smith which amazed him in 2023, Alcaraz answered with a smile. “I was surprised by Lewis Hamilton’s congratulations because he had never written to me before and we had never interacted.” He also opened up about other legendary people who praised him and congratulated him. “The congratulations I have received are similar and very special. From athletes and well-known people. Will Smith congratulated me again, Neymar, who is always there following me and I am very grateful to him. Rafa, Pau Gasol, Ilia Topuria, Fernando Alonso”

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if the Spaniard can continue his prowess and win more at the Paris Olympics and then at the US Open.
