The ‘Australian(read American) Open’ is going absolutely amazing for three players, namely Madison Keys, Ben Shelton, and Taylor Townsend. On Wednesday, Keys and Shelton reached semifinal round in Melbourne. While Keys beat Elina Svitolina, Shelton edged out Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the QF. On the other hand, Townsend successfully entered the semis in women’s doubles with her partner Katernia Siniakova. They beat the pair of Zhang Shuai and Kristina Mladenovic in the QF round. Naturally, these Americans are absolutely losing it on social media!
WTA pro Taylor Townsend was elated to make it to her first SF in the doubles in Melbourne. She shared a post on Instagram to hype herself up. Sharing several pictures with her partner Siniakova from the quarterfinal, she wrote, “Semis, we vibing” 🦘🤟🏾✨” She and Siniakova took the match against Zhang and Mladenovic with a score line of 6-1, 7-5. Well, her compatriot and World No. 14 Madison Keys couldn’t resist from joining in.
Escalating the hype level, she commented, “🗣️ Another one”. Keys suggested that Townsend and her partner can win a second major title together after Siniaková and Townsend won the Wimbledon 2024 Ladies’ Doubles title, defeating Dabrowski and Routliffe 7-6(7-5), 7-6(7-1).

Speaking of Madison Keys, the 2022 Australian Open finalist is also looking great touch. She overcame the challenge of Svitolina at the Rod Laver Arena and snatched the victory after trailing in the first set. With a final score line of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, she ensured her place in the last four. It will be her third SF appearance in the major down under. Meanwhile, Townsend didn’t stop with her hype post on Instagram.
She then posted a story to give special mention to compatriot and young ATP pro Ben Shelton. He snatched the QF battle from Sonego with a score line of 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4). In her IG story, dated January 22, Townsend put up his picture and simply wrote “Proud @benshelton🤟🏾✨”
Speaking more of the 22-year-old, he’s about to play the toughest semifinal in a Slam in his career. Why? Well, he’ll be up against none other than World No.1 Jannik Sinner. The Italian summed up the men’s last four on Wednesday. In the QF round, he beat local boy Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 at the Rod Laver Arena. So is Shelton ready to face him?

After defeating Lorenzo Sonego, Ben Shelton was asked to share his thoughts on who he would like to face in the semis. Firstly, he began with praising words for his Italian opponent in the QF round. He said, “I feel relieved right now, shoutout to Lorenzo Sonego because that was some ridiculous tennis. I’m just really happy to be through, to get my first win on Rod Laver Arena. Thanks everybody for coming out, it was one of my favorite matches of my career.”
Continuing further, he then added his thoughts regarding his expectations for the SF round on Friday. At that time, a winner between Sinner and Minaur in the QF round wasn’t confirmed. Shelton simply said, “Well, I mean, if it’s the home favorite, Alex de Minaur, 100 percent you guys can boo me, you can throw stuff at my head. I understand, home guy.”
On the possibility of facing Sinner, he revealed, “If it’s the No. 1 in the world, it’ll probably be the same. I’m looking forward to it. I know I got a few people in the crowd who are going to be pulling for me too. ” So far, they have met each other five times, with the Fox leading the h2h tally 4-1. But there is a special record that Sinner holds against Americans.
