Is John McEnroe's commentary too harsh, or is he just telling it like it is?

Ashleigh Barty can do no wrong, can she? The Australian tennis star was a widely respected player across the globe, with her simplistic style of play reaping huge dividends. Barty dominated the women’s circuit during her peak, winning three Grand Slam titles, all on different surfaces. However, she shocked one and all with her surprising decision to retire after winning the Australian Open title in 2022. Two years after calling it quits, Barty has made a comeback to tennis, albeit in a different role.

The Australian star made her maiden appearance in the commentator’s box during the ongoing Wimbledon Championships. Barty did a great job out there, and she was a delight to hear, according to the fans. Further, she also did commentary along with John McEnroe in the women’s singles final between Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova. While McEnroe was involved in many slip-ups, Barty compensated for it and won praise from the fans.

Over the past few months, McEnroe has had a torrid time in the commentators’ panel. The American legend has been involved in many slip-ups and controversies. Despite this, he has continued taking up this role, with fans’ comments not bothering him. It all started at the French Open when he made a huge blunder of pronouncing the players’ names incorrectly. Subsequently, he also caused a massive stir for his insensitive comment about Iga Swiatek. After the French Open final, he asked if Swiatek would ‘wear a little makeup’ during the presentation ceremony.

However, McEnroe is not the only one who has caused a stir with his commentary. During the Wimbledon final, Chris Evert made huge blunders in pronouncing the name of Jasmine Paolini incorrectly, with fans slamming her for this.

Ashleigh Barty delights fans with her commentary skills

Like always, fans had a torrid time with McEnroe in the commentator’s box. His constant chirping during the points irritated fans and additionally, he was also involved in multiple slipups. On the other hand, Barty was sharp and often covered up for him. As a result, many fans praised her, with one of them saying, “Ash Barty kinda makes John McEnroe tolerable, is there anything she can’t do?”

Similarly, another fan admitted that Barty was doing a great job of shutting down McEnroe.

On the other hand, one of the fans called out the other commentator in the box instead of McEnroe. The comment read, “Ash Barty and John McEnroe are doing good commentary but can someone tell Sam Smith to shut up and stop talking during points!” Lastly, the duo of Barty and McEnroe made a good one, according to one of the Twitter users, who said, “Barty and McEnroe are a pretty good combo on coms. Yin and yang areas. Who knew?”

Meanwhile, the broadcasters should take a serious look into this situation, with the viewership of tennis on the constant decline. Fans aren’t happy with the choice of commentators and this could further dwindle the viewership.
