Coco Gauff‘s Roland Garros journey has now come to a challenging phase. The former runner-up has proven to be dominant so far as she secured a position in the semi-final after serving an intense three-setter defeat to Ons Jabeur. While her upcoming rival Iga Swiatek has always been a hard nut to crack, former pro Andy Roddick had something from his own career to present in defense for Gauff.

In a recent episode of “Served by Andy Roddick”, the retired tennis star came forward to support Gauff, finding her rivalry relatable to what he faced in his career against Roger Federer.

Roddick recalled his struggles against the Swiss tennis maestro, saying, “So I’m going to draw the parallel between what Coco’s going through with Iga. I talked about her record being bad and only will I ever do that when I throw myself under the bus first. I was the second best player on grass for probably half a decade. It just sucked because the best player was also his best surface.”

Roddick highlighted that despite Gauff’s recent dominance, her upcoming match rival has her claws dug deeper into the red dirt. “That’s what we’re seeing at the French Open now right, losing the finals a couple years ago quarter. And now it’s the Iga test again on the toughest ask clay might very well be Coco’s best surface. It just so happens that Iga is on her way to being in the conversation for one of the best ever on this surface.”

Laying the facts bare, Roddick mentioned the fact he believes Gauff needs to play an exceptional match to have a chance against the Pole. “Her record has been dominant, I think Coco has to play a near-perfect match. I think she has to play outside of her comfort zone,” he added.

Coco Gauff is set to face Iga Swiatek for the 12th time in their career today. Although the young American is known to dominate even the strongest competitors on tour, her head-to-head stats against Swiatek create concerns. Having three French Open titles in her bucket already, the Pole possesses a massive 10-1 lead over the US Open champion.

On a similar note, Roger Federer exceeded his run over Andy Roddick with a massive 21-3 win record. Although the former American ATP star was one of the best hands, his situation remains another example of what’s currently happening between Gauff and Swiatek.

Coco Gauff’s ‘nothing to lose’ statement backfires as rival dominates

Being focused on her performance and ignoring the consideration of a different strategy, the young American updated the press with a fearless response. “It doesn’t mean anything. Maybe I could lose with the same score, maybe not, but I’m just going to go in and just try to win. I have nothing to lose. All the pressure is on her,” she said.

While Swiatek didn’t waste much time in eliminating her semi-final rival, it was not just a win but also a response to her statement. As the 20-year-old’s fearless statement backfired, taking down her own confidence, it is evident that she needs a better approach to stop Swiatek from extending the already-extended lead.
