Can Iga Swiatek thrive without Tomasz Wiktorowski, or was he the secret to her success?

The Paris Olympics 2024 brought a massive opportunity for Iga Swiatek. While fans were expecting a massive result from the Roland Garros champion, her unexpected defeat against Qinwen Zheng led her to a disturbing phase. The WTA star is currently doing everything she can to rise back. With Naomi Osaka’s ex-coach Wim Fissette by her side, things started seeming clearer. But even after that, debates continued to surround rumors about her psychologist’s role in her recent coach split. Amid the rumore, compatriot Hubert Hurkacz has now come forward to defend the World No. 1.

The 27-year-old recently weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding Iga Świątek’s psychologist, Daria Abramowicz, and her controversial role in the Pole’s team. Indulging in a conversation with Wyborcza.pl, Hurkacz, shared that he too benefits from working with a psychologist, though in a different way. “I also work with a psychologist. And many athletes benefit from such help,” Hurkacz stated, highlighting that psychological support has become a valuable tool for many athletes in handling the pressures of professional sports.

When the journalist of Wyborcza.pl remarked that the role of Abramowicz in Swiatek’s team is far more important than just helping the player prepare for the matches mentally, as she always sits next to the coach, Hurkacz had an apt response to that. He was quick to point out that each athlete’s needs are different and the level of involvement from a psychologist can vary. “This is an individual matter. Every athlete must decide what he needs. How close is the psychologist to be. It is important that there is good communication and well-coordinated cooperation in the team: from a masseur, a physiotherapist, a psychologist to a coach,” Hurkacz said.

This discussion took place amid Świątek’s recent split with her long-time coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski. During their partnership, Świątek secured four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic bronze medal. Despite their success, there have been speculations that Abramowicz may have played a role in the decision to end the coaching relationship.

While it remains unclear whether Abramowicz was directly responsible for the split, her role in Swiatek’s team is undeniable. However, besides all other comments, Swiatek’s ex-coach Tomasz Wiktorowski himself made things clear from his end.
