Jannik Sinner had previously been cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent panel in March last year, but then WADA sought a ban of up to two years. However, after a long wait, on February 15, WADA released a statement saying, Sinner will serve his period of ineligibility from 9 February 2025 to 11:59 pm on 4 May 2025. According to Sinner’s statements, he has accepted that he is responsible for his team and realized WADA’s strict rules are important for the protection of the sport. He said, “On that basis, I have accepted Wada’s offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a three-month sanction.” How did the tennis world react to his acceptance?
Soon after the news about his ban went out, Serena Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs came up with a tweet saying, “What a fr—in joke Wada is…” She also mentioned that she’d talk about this in her next podcast…
Just as promised, Williams’ former coach, Rennae Stubbs took up this topic during the recent episode of The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast. However, while explaining Jannik Sinner’s innocence in this case, she was also seen calling out Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka for their controversial remarks on the same. What did these two say, though? Well, Nick Kygios has been one of the most vocal individuals in Sinner’s doping saga. As soon as the news of Sinner’s ban went out, Kyrgios dropped comments like, “Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis doesn’t exist.”

Then after this, even Stan Wawrinka dropped a tweet saying, “I don’t believe in a clean sport anymore …” Although, Kyrgios gave a nod to his comments, former Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez didn’t look too pleased with Wawrinka’s comments. He replied, “I do Stan. It’s very clear he hasn’t done anything to enhance his performance, that’s proven. He’s taking full responsibility for others mistake and 3 months suspension consequently. Longer suspension would’ve made sport cleaner? I don’t think so.”
Now, after Lopez, Rennae Stubbs was also spotted highlighting the innocence of Jannik Sinner. During the podcast, she said, “The issue in all of this as well is when you get statements from certain players on Twitter as well, namely Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka. These types of comments that they’re making, it’s like guys when someone makes a statement like why would he admit it? So, wait a second! He’s admitted, he’s taking the three-month ban, so he’s admitted that he was at fault because of this and that he admitted that he had it in his system.”
The 53-year-old Aussie legend, further questioned, “Why is he only getting this and why is he getting to choose this? It’s not like when you get accused of m—–ing someone or committing mansl–ghter or whatever, they’re like, okay, here’s the deal. If you know, you haven’t k-lled anyone and then someone says to you, oh, but we have you know, this and that and we’re going to take you here and we’re going to put you through court and we’ve got some evidence an you’re like, what the f-ck? I didn’t do anything. It’s kind of like, why would you admit fault? Yeah, they’re like, because it’s either three months or 30 years, you know because that’s what i would have been.”

Stubbs highlighted how even a one or two-year break from tennis can do enormously bad for Jannik Sinner‘s tennis. She then pointed out to name one player who came back and played well after a doping suspension. According to Rennae Stubbs, Sinner had to negotiate this deal because “WADA needed a win here.” She feels WADA needed to be able to say to have some integrity and resemblance of power to say that they’re still going to suspend him. Now, we have heard Stubbs’ reaction, but what are the other renowned personalities in the tennis world saying about this ban, though?

“It’s very unlikely that he did doping” – After Stubbs, another former coach of Serena Williams shows support for Jannik Sinner
Mixed reactions have been coming in from the tennis world on Jannik Sinner’s three-month ban. Apart from Kyrgios and Wawrinka, the former world number one, Yevgeny Kafelnikov also showcased his annoyance over the ruling by calling WADA the “dirtiest organization.” Even Daniil Medvedev took a subtle at WADA, recently. Players like Novak Djokovic and Liam Broady also spoke about this issue recently.
Djokovic called out the anti-doping agencies over a lack of trust amid Jannik Sinner’s doping ban. He revealed that he has spoken to several players on this and most of the players are “not satisfied” and they believe, “there was favoritism.” Talking about “favoritism,” Broady, spoke about how this band would have “little” impact on Jannik Sinner’s career because his ban will end the day before the Rome Masters. He feels this would give him a perfect preparatory stage ahead of the French Open. On top of that, he also highlighted the fact that Sinner will most likely retain the top spot as well.

So Liam Broad admitted that he was a “little bit upset at the verdict” and also claimed that “it does appear to be favoritism towards the better players on the Tour.” However, according to renowned tennis coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, Jannik Sinner’s case is a “huge scandal.” According to the Frenchman, “It’s not about him being guilty or not, the question is more about how the anti-doping dealt with the situation.”
He further added, “It’s very unlikely that he (Sinner) did doping, this is really a personal statement: I don’t think it’s his mindset at all, his mentality to do doping, first. Second, when you find such low levels of a forbidden product in someone, in 90% of the cases, if not more, it is a contamination, and the player is a victim so that’s why I think he is innocent.” Even German legend, Boris Becker recently showed his support for the Italian after seeing, Ross Wenzel’s (the General Council member of WADA) statement on Sinner’s doping saga.
