Venus and Serena Williams have inspired a lot of young tennis sensations to come out and play tennis. Frances Tiafoe praised the Williams sisters in a recent interview remarking that they were the sole reason many American kids pick up the sports in the first place. And also talked about what his tennis legacy should look like after years as an American tennis player.

The Williams sisters duo have inspired a lot of American black athletes including Coco Gauff and Frances Tiafoe. And, Tiaofe has nothing but praises for them.

Frances Tiafoe praises the Williams sisters

Recently, the 24-year-old player made an appearance on ‘The Old man and the Three podcast’. He talked about how watching the 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams, and her elder sister influenced his sports dreams to get a direction. And while looking up to them, he also talked about what kind of tennis legacy he hopes he can create one day in the future.

Tiafoe said, “You know with obviously my story and everything if Serena and Venus weren’t playing tennis even with the come-up I had like, I am, you know, seven eight years old watching them play against each other in the Wimbledon final. In a predominantly white sport.” The Wimbledon semifinalist talked about how he started watching the iconic sister duo when he was seven years old.

“But I want to be remembered like that. And I think and when you create that it’s you know, it’s insane. And I want more people of color to play the game of tennis, obviously. Make it more accessible and let people know that it is fun. So yeah, that’s so it’s always an emotional topic for me and it’s something I really want to do. I really want my Legacy to be,” the 24-year-old tennis player added about how he projected his career to be. 

Tiafoe’s first step toward creating his legacy

The 24-year-old tennis player made history earlier this year. He became the first black American male to advance to the US Open semifinals. In 1972, Arthur Ashe became the last black American player to advance to the US Open semifinals. The 24-year-old Maryland player’s first step in building a legacy modeled after the famous William sisters may be breaking records and barriers.

In addition, he made history by becoming the first American to reach the semifinals of the hard-court tennis competition since Andy Roddick in 2006. Since Roddick’s Grand Slam victory in 2003, an American guy has not won the US Open. The US Open championship, though, has been absent for a while, and American supporters are eager to bring it home.
