“Every relationship has good times and bad times. I could just feel that things were not right.” Ajla Tomljanović spoke about her split with fellow tennis star Matteo Berrettini in a previous episode of the Break Point. Both these players started dating each other in October 2019, and they were spotted together for a few years before they called it quits in spring 2022. Throughout this phase, this power couple was seen supporting each other in the highs and lows of their professional tennis tour. Speaking about her relationship with Matteo Berrettini, the Aussie once said, “You can hear people say that they never date a tennis player because, I don’t know, they don’t like that they do the same thing, that it’s always about tennis. But, in reality, we don’t talk about tennis a lot.” Highlighting more about how they helped each other in their tennis journeys, Ajla Tomljanović added, “When we have the need, it’s really nice to talk to each other because we understand that the best. Those feelings before a big match, or after a tough loss … it’s natural, the way I’m going to react, or he’s going to react. That’s a really nice thing, the understanding about the lifestyle and the priorities. It’s just nice to be on the same page. It definitely works.“

Even Matteo Berrettini once spoke about how Ajla Tomljanović understands him and the demands that are usually involved during the Tour. He highlighted that he feels, “It’s important to have a person that understands what I’m doing.” Their chemistry looked absolutely picture-perfect, on and off the court! For example, when both of them reached the QF of the Wimbledon Championships in 2021, Ajla Tomljanović said she liked it when both of them played at the same time. She believes it takes away “the stress of when you watch from the locker room.”

Matteo Berrettini also echoed the same later on! He said, “I feel ten times more stressed when I’m watching her match than when I’m actually playing my match.” Ajla Tomljanović’s best records on the tennis court have been reaching the QF at the 2021 and 2022 Wimbledon Championships and the 2022 US Open. In 2021, during an interview, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini was seen giving her some tips about how she should approach her game.

He said, “I know her, and I think I know how much she’s tough on herself. I’m always telling her that she has to kind of tell herself that she achieved a lot during her career, and she has to enjoy what she’s doing.” Like this, they were the strongest pillars of support for each other through every ups and downs, but what really brought an end to their relationship? Well, in reply to a similar question, Berrettini once said, “We broke up because in the end, in life, we have to be happy, and if that is not happening, I think it’s not worth it .”

Interestingly, Matteo Berrettini still has a picture of them from the 2021 Met Gala on his IG handle. However, Berrettini doesn’t appear anywhere on Tomljanovic’s IG account.
