Age always catches up to athletes. Even the best of them fail to compete consistently at the top level for a long time. For instance, Serena Williams had entered a stage where she would only compete in Grand Slams. Roger Federer in 2017 and 2018 skipped the clay season entirely to prepare for Wimbledon. Another veteran seems to be joining the same territory now.

In case you are wondering, the veteran in question here is Novak Djokovic. Since the tennis calendar is long and tedious, it does not offer players enough time to rest because major events occur frequently. Having long been in the circuit, 36-year-old Novak Djokovic finds it hard to keep up with the rest of the tour as he announces unfortunate news about an upcoming Masters event.

Despite being the Number 2 ranked player in the world and winning Slams regularly, Novak Djokovic has been trying to limit his playing time. Arguably, Djokovic has entered a stage in his career where ranking points are not his prime concern. For someone with records like his, Grand Slam victories would only add more to his lasting legacy. To maximize his chances by being in his best shape for the four major events, Djokovic needs to prioritize resting and recovering through the lesser important events.

Serena Williams did the same in the final stages of her career. In fact, Djokovic has been doing so since 2021, where he plans out his calendar according to the Slams. After a hectic couple of weeks at Wimbledon, the Serb has withdrawn from the Canadian Open. Despite the 1000 ATP points at stake, he has chosen to recuperate for the upcoming US Open.

However, this unfortunate bit of news also has a silver lining. Djokovic’s withdrawal from the tournament left an empty spot in the fixtures. This vacancy has opened the doors for an American sensation – a young player who recently had a dream run at Wimbledon.

Djokovic paves the way for Wimbledon’s breakout star

Christopher Eubanks has replaced the World No. 2. Eubanks has been reaping the rewards for his hard work in more than one way. He started the year outside the Top 100 and made the quarter-finals of the Miami Open. After his Wimbledon heroics and first ATP title at Mallorca, he raced up to 31 in the ATP rankings. However, since the entry list for the Canadian Open was released before his ranking jump, the American failed to get a direct entry.
